Hard reset is most reliable solution. The steps you linked didn't work for me.

Device asked for pin, then crashed/powered off. In settings/phone I have "No SIM", so cannot disable pin. Soft reset doesn't help. "No SIM" icon is showing in notification bar.

My first gen LG 900 definitely had a compass, and so does my gen 2 Lumia 800. The problem is in the software, not the hardware. Nokia Maps on Symbian had compass mode on my old N97, yet Nokia Maps on WP doesn't.
