I had the same issue on Windows Phone 8. My podcasts stopped downloading automatically. Episodes were all listed as 'pending' but they never downloaded. I finally figured out that this happened when I tried to use the Windows Phone 8 application for Windows 8 desktop to sync a podcast series...
