Indeed, the Lumia 520 didnt have enough room for T-mobile branding.

Sure would be nice. I have seen a few pics of the Lumia 520 with red cover, that looks pretty sweet.

Funny thing is, I just did that with a mirror two days ago, actually it worked fine, but clunky... As far as battery life was concerned, just leave it plugged in :-)
