Maybe it's just because your phone (including its battery) is older? I'm on Lumia 920, latest build and get the same battery time as I got using WP8. Of course I'm not sure about this, but maybe it's something to consider...

You have to adjust the text size to minimum scaling. Go to settings -> System -> Display and adjust the slider for text size to the left. If you use your phone in landscape mode you'll get the split screen back for some apps. Works also for smaller phones like Lumia 920.

I got wp8.1 update 2 on Lumia 920 CV for the first try. Then I removed the Windows Insider App.

Same for me with Lumia 920 8.1 DP Update 2. But I kind of like the dark, invisible buttons and the darker screen :)
