We IOS users are having to wait patiently for the update, no sign of anything yet in the app store.

Before this morphs into a "new firmware" thread I just want to say I've really enjoyed the discussion so far, and hope it continues. Some interesting questions have come up, along with a bit of Monday morning quarterbacking about MS's business strategy with the Band.

I somehow missed Dan Rubino's EXCELLENT blog post that touches on many of the issues raised here, including short supply of the Band, competing vs. promoting other activity-band companies, and whether the Band is a "real" or a "proof-of-concept" product. I strongly suggest reading it if you missed it back in November. I don't agree with his analysis 100% but it's a great read either way:

I remember reading this when I was trying to get a band in the UK and it was a good read but like you didn't agree a 100%. My thoughts are that a demonstration device for a platform that doesn't work yet or not available even in demonstration mode (for the band) is a stupid strategy and would only highlight it as a potential flop if all the pieces to the jigsaw do not fit together out of the gate, i.e. web browser with connection to Healthvault, fully working sensors with accompanying data, fully fledged phone with all data (100% working on a Windows phone), actionable insights etc...

Why would Microsoft release a half baked product?
To me that question has yet to be answered, if I was a potential partner for licensing the 10 wrist worn sensors I would want to see the fully baked working eco-system which demonstrates the full potential of the sensors.
As a end consumer one of the reasons I brought the Band was based on it's potential and that MS being a software company they would deliver improvements quickly.

Well at least we know the firmware update process works after 2 months even if it was just a minor update.

But if they worked out bugs and stuff, I'll take that right now over new features. Still don't know why Microsoft won't say what's in the update... ??

As I posted in another thread, was told today by employee at local MS store that they were informed the shipment of bands just got in would be last of "version1". No other information was provided.

I really need to stop being an early adopter when it comes to Microsoft and wait for the second or third generations of their products. I should have learn my lesson with my Surface RT.

Well, that would be the last shipment of that firmware.

Well, I've opined before that MS would do well with a V1.5 - same hardware but shaped for a better fit on the wrist. For example, if the display part took a bend just at the edge of the active display - it wouldn't be so clunky and would fit better on petite wrists.

Most everything I've seen posted indicates that MS has nailed the hardware - but the fit needs work. Using the same hardware would minimize the support headaches in doing updates.

Unless something has been discontinued or they ran out of processing horsepower already, it would seem odd to do a major hardware upgrade only 3 months after introduction. But a better package would do a lot.

I'm beginning to think alot of the hardware innovation came from Ballmer (Surface, Nokia Aquisition, Xbox). This couldn't have started under Nadella and must have been in development for years. Maybe he just had to release this device and then divert resources elsewhere.

I'm guessing they are using the early band adopters to gather data to use for the health platform development. Without real world data they would have terrible bugs and such at the launch of such a large and ambitious platform. With just the number of bands they have sold already they must be getting a huge amount of data. They probably wanted to develop capabilities that went beyond what most of the current fitness trackers had and so they decided to build a sensor loaded device for as cheap as possible to get it out there. I believe it's all about the platform and any following they can build with the hardware is just gravy.
