Custom ringtones

Can anyone tell me, from their real, successful experience (i.e. I don't need a quoted but untried instruction) how to make a piece of a music track work as a ring tone on my 550?

So far I have tried various software offerings and read the manual. None of that was useful. I have created short WAV & WMA files and placed them in the phone's Ringtones folder, which was empty. I don't know where the default sounds are stored.

I do remember a way that worked on 8.1, which was making one, putting it on a sd card, put the sd card into the phone and then from there, texting it to myself. When you try to play it, there will be an option to save it.

I use Skydrive Ringtone Maker. It's an old app but still works.
