What are you needs and preferences?

Those two devices are two different sizes. 830 has a physical camera button, but 640XL has a better front camera.

For me, this is how I would compare them:

830 Pros:
  • Size of phone (form factor)
  • Physical camera button
  • Wireless charging battery covers included
  • Super Sensitive Touch for use with gloves
  • Double the internal storage of 640 XL

830 cons:
  • AT&T version did not get necessary firmware update during the time I had it
  • Netflix and Bluetooth issues due to lack of firmware update
  • Capacitive buttons weren't sensitive enough/Didn't work at all with film screen protector installed
  • Full glance screen support (background images/lockscreen display in low power mode)

640 XL pros:
  • Larger screen size
  • On-screen buttons are more touch responsive than capacitive buttons.
  • Higher camera resolution
  • Longer battery life

640 XL cons:
  • On-screen buttons take some getting used to
  • No physical camera button
  • No wireless charging without modding the phone
  • Size makes it more difficult to use one-handed
  • Can't use touch screen with gloves.
  • Minimal glance support (Date/Time and notification icons only)

I've been using the 640 XL for about 7 months after carrying the 830 for about 4 months. The biggest reason I abandoned the 830 is due to the lack of firmware updates because I had the AT&T version. I'd have kept the 830 if AT&T would have given any indication of the future supported updates or if I would have had the unlocked version of the phone.

I also want to chime in to say that the 830's camera is technologically superior, despite the lower MP count.

The 830 did indeed get the proper firmware update, but now Windows 10 is the next hurdle. The ATT 640 I just got running on 10 doesn't seem to be too bad though.

I will recommend the 640XL as I use it too,I have good reason to recommend it.
Lets put aside the specs and talk about usability.
The following are not in 830:
The 640XL is more up to date phone with more system apps and more features.
Better camera app
Latest Windows 8.1 update 2
Better battery
Better stability when upgraded to Windows 10 mobile
Better camera
Better display
Lighter size to weight ratio
Better front camera
Microsoft branding
And many more
I've been using the 640XL and it has only freezed on me once in more than a month, that's really stable if you ask me.

Your post seems to be referring to stock software/firmware at the time of release. The two points quoted are null and void once the phones are updated to Windows 10.

Hmm maybe you're right about the camera.
I haven't updated my 640XL to Windows 10 mobile but I've seen less people posting about having issues with Windows 10 mobile on their 640XL. So I'm saying this based on observation, that it's more stable on Windows 10 mobile.
Also I think 640 and 640XL were the first phones to be declared windows 10 mobile ready by Microsoft if I remember correctly.
So they "could" function better than 830 on Windows 10 mobile.

Is that the official update or Insider preview? I have 3 other family members using the AT&T 640. My brother is on the Insider program, but last I checked, the other two phones reported that Microsoft is working with the service provider to prepare the update.

It was with Insider.

830 Much more durable, screen a bit smaller than 640XL. Camera better on 830, has more memory. 830 is better.
I cracked my screen /smashed/ & my replacement phone was the 640XL. Don't like much,& it's BIG with a much bigger SIM card to.
