    Recent chat with MSFT tech:

No it does not, as that requires Snapdragon 800. This Lumia 640 has the 400

Ok. But the 635 is advertised as having this feature and it has the same processor.

I'm not able to find an answer for why that is, the listed phones that are compatible with Hey Cortana are the 630, 635, 730, 735, 830, 930, 1520, and the Icon

So, can you install this app or not?

I believe it only works on Lumia 930, Lumia 1520 and Lumia Icon.

    Just found this...

Currently, SensorCore is available on the Lumia 630, Lumia 635, Lumia 730, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, Lumia 930, Lumia 1520 and Lumia Icon.
Snapdragon 800 processor equipped phones currently include Lumia 930, Lumia 1520 and Lumia Icon.

You need both SensorCore and Snapdragon 800 processor which includes only the 930, 1520, Icon. You also need the Denim firmware.

So if I understand correctly, the Lumia 640 has Cortana but not the listening feature of Hey Cortana. Can you not talk to Cortana at all on the 640 then? Do you have to type it all?

Hubby has a Moto G 2014 with Ok Google on it. He will rib me mercilessly....

Every phone with 8.1 and later have "Cortana". "Hey Cortana" is just capable of waking the phone up with that command. You can talk just fine with only Cortana, you just wont be able to wake the phone up via voice command.

Thanks. Not sure I like Cortana listening in all the time anyway. ;)

What about if I upgrade my 640 to win 10, will "hey Cortana" work then. Supposedly this feature works on the Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL.

I believe it's a hardware thing, so it wouldn't work at all.

I thought Cortana depends on the region you are in. My region doesn't have it yet.

Cortana availability is region and language dependent. Hey Cortana is Cortana, and hardware dependent.

There are apps that activates via voice... This should not be a hardware requirement at all!

Example or you're just buzzing. To be voice activated from sleeping state, means that there is a mic fifo buffer which is constantly updated and monitored for special content (codeword). I'd guess software implementation of it, though possible, will be extremely power-hungry and eat battery within couple hours.

Hey Cortana is not available now on my WP10 AU L640 LTE in the UK but is working nicely on the home PC. In fact 'she' listens in all the time it seems. Last night while watching a movie on TV Cortana 'woke' up the sleeping laptop to announce 'she' was going to load 'Maps' - which 'she' duly did!
Not sure if I want my PC arbitrarily opening/closing apps but there you go it just shows Cortana can pick up 'key words' spoken by the TV in the background though I'm pretty sure no one in Dead Snow 2 actually said 'Hey Cortana - open Maps'!

Your thumb is "Hey Cortana" here, hehe! ("Hey Thumbelina!")

I didn't realise there was Cortana and Hey Cortana.

Cortana is Cortana, there aren't different versions of her, you just invoke her listening ear with a long press on the search button on a non SensorCore+SD800 device, and on a supported "Hey Cortana" capable device (SensorCore+SD800), you can ALSO invoke her with "Hey Cortana".

I hope that sufficiently disambiguates things well enough.
