On my (well my wife's, but I'm setting it up) shiny new Lumia 640. the volume rocker changes the ringer volume when the phone is is normal mode - start screen etc.

This is very inconvenient. The phone can be dropped into a bag while in this mode - and then the volume changes from minor random bumps. Thr changes can result in missed calls as the phone becomes silent.

And also, it's not actually very convenient when I do want to change the volume! I'd prefer to change it while listening to the ringtone so I know what I am choosing. This worked on old phones, but the Lumia's ringtone changing menu does not have a volume entry.

So, is there any way I can disable the volume change from random presses of the rocker? And is there any way I can enable changing the volume while listening to the ringtone?

Hmm, I haven't come across this issue. Does your wife have double tap to wake enabled on her phone? If so, she can consider turning it off as an option. Something that I do personally is that with Glance enabled (and set to peek) is that I use the power button to lock the screen before putting it in my purse. That's just what I do, but someone else might have a better idea over my own.
