I guess it depends on how gentle/hard you are in using your phone. The 640 has Gorilla Glass 3 with an Oleophobic coating. GG 3 is not indestructible and can be scratched/damaged by carrying in a pocket with keys, etc. The Oleophobic coating is not permanent either and will eventually wear off from normal use. The coating can also be damaged/removed by cleaning with other than a clean, soft microfiber cloth or by using Alcohol or other harsh cleaning solutions that can remove the coating. If your screen is really dirty, using a water-based solution made specifically for cleaning touchscreens should do the trick - just be certain it contains no Alcohol.

For these reasons, I'm going to try using the Fosmon Matte Screen Protectors linked below on my new 640. Another Windows Central member recommended them and they're so inexpensive I figure why not use them.

Thanks for the info, I am replacing my 635 which has a very scratched screen with a new 640, and although I don't use it a lot I don't want it to wind up like the 635 which seemed to have a very poor glass screen.

Only the new sapphire screens are almost impossible to scratch.. But they come at a cost. GG, regardless of which iteration, is prone to scratching - especially with sand. However scratches don't really bother me so no big deal for me.

Amazon.com: Lumia 640 Screen Protector, LK Anti Scratch Premium 0.33mm 2.5D Rounded Edge 9H Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Microsoft Lumia 640: Electronics
I did this one... 0.30 mm vs 0.33mm (Thinner the better glass is heavy)

    http://www.amazon.com/Protector-Temp...pUvbUpU3325044

[0.3mm] The Thinnest Tempered Glass Screen Protector, thinner than the normal 0.33mm, feel nothing on the screen and 99.99% touch-screen accurate.

The way I see it..instead of a case the TG does the job. At <$9 a refresh every six months is nice

Try not to go too thin on glass. The thinner ones tend to crack / break at the edges fairly easily. The 0.3mm ones appear to withstand very well.
This is coming from a tempered glass "installer" (me), as I'm in charge of the devices (iPhones, iPads, Surface Pros) in my corporate environment.

I have had a 640 naked for about a month without any scratches. My 1520 somehow got more scratches, maybe because the screen would get rubbed by my tungsten ring more often because of the size. Essentially gorilla glass is harder than most metals (steel, gold, copper, iron, platinum) but not all metals (tungsten carbide), diamond, or ceramic. That is why even a smooth diamond would scratch the glass, but a steel knife doesn't. It makes the videos on YouTube scratching a phone seem silly. Keys should not scratch glass anymore than chalk can scratch copper.

To the other reply about sapphire, it is harder than glass, but would still scratch from harder materials. The thing that makes it impractical currently is it is less flexible and prone to cracking. May change in the future.

I know sapphire will still scratch, but I simply wanted to point out that it is more scratch resistant than GG. Some of the newest models are looking at sapphire but it has currently been regulated down to luxury brands. You are right that it has its issues, but who knows what engineering feats will make it viable.
