Apologies for sounding like a tech noob, but I was reading some of the rumoured specs for the new 950's and wanted to know what exactly is a WQHD display?

Is WQHD technology of a noticeably better quality / standard / resolution than my lumia 1520? Is it on a par with the screen quality that Apple have on the iphone 6s? This isn't a troll....I honestly have no idea

Basically its a fancy acronym-ish way of saying how many pixels are in there, not the actual screen technology.
For example, HVGA means 480x320, the resolution in the early iPhones and later Palm devices.

As for the first part, a read through this should answer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphi...lay_resolution

Of course the 950/950XL have higher resolution + OLED, but we don't know about the exact PPI of those two 5.7" and 5.2" screens .

OLED will be better than LCD. (Better color reproduction). Don't know if OLED will be better than the retina IPS LCD display of iPhone.

    For Comparison

    1520 has 6" 1080 x 1920 pixels (FHD) IPS LCD @ 367 ppi
950 has 5.2" 1440x2560 pixels (WQHD) OLED @ unknown ppi
950XL has 5.7" 1440x2560 pixels (WQHD) OLED @ unknown ppi
    iPhone 6 has a 4.7" 1334 x 740 pixels (WXGA) IPS LCD @326 ppi
iPhone 6 Plus has 5.5" 1920x1080 pixels (FHD) IPS LCD @401 ppi

In the end its all about ratio between Screen Size, Pixels & Pixel density.
That's what determines the screen quality.

WQHD is referring to the resolution, the amount of pixels on the display.
    WQHD is a 16:9 aspect ratio display with 2560 x 1440 pixels.

    By comparison:

    - 1520 has 1920x1080 pixels on a 6 inch diagonal screen.

    - 950XL has 2560x1440 pixels on a 5.7 inch diagonal screens..

    - 950 has 2560x1440 pixels on a 5.2 inch diagonal screen (as rumored)

In other (not-so-technical) words, there would be close to impossible to spot the individual pixels on those displays, no matter how close you hold the phone to your eyes. Which of course means that those screens will be crystal clear on both of the devices.

OLED and LCD have their ups and downs.
Burn in is more likely to happen with an OLED and individual pixels lighting makes for great contrast. Power usage varies widely depending on that the screen is displaying.
LCD's are solid and proven. Power usage is constant. etc.

    There's more info out there

The pixel density on the new models isn't unknown. It's just a matter of the doing the math. Here they are:
    1520 has 6" 1080 x 1920 pixels (FHD) IPS LCD @ 367 ppi
    950 has 5.2" 1440x2560 pixels (WQHD) OLED @ 565 ppi
    950XL has 5.7" 1440x2560 pixels (WQHD) OLED @ 515 ppi
    iPhone 6 has a 4.7" 1334 x 740 pixels (WXGA) IPS LCD @326 ppi
iPhone 6 Plus has 5.5" 1920x1080 pixels (FHD) IPS LCD @401 ppi

Yeah I got the same numbers. A ppi of over 500 is pretty remarkable, I just fear for the battery life pushing that many pixels.

Remarkable, yes. Useful? I don't know.

Steve Jobs said that the human eye could only discern 300 ppi. Let's assume that some (much? most?) of that was marketing bluster. For the sake of this post, let's say that 98% of humans can't resolve above 400 ppi. (I have no idea what the actual number is.) Given that assumption, are we still pleased when a phone shows things that we can't see?

What if the phone showed 1,000 ppi? Are we excited for the improved quality? Or does it become remarkable in a bad way? What about 1,000,000 ppi?

At what point do we recognize that some factors are worth improving and that others are not?

Without my contact lenses (which makes me very near sighted) I can easily see the pixels on my 1520.
