I thought both had liquid cooling?

Nope, only the XL. Likely because of the 810 running so hot and the 808 not needing additional cooling.

Personally I think 6 cores is too much for what we do with our phones, let alone 8. However, these multi core soc's might come in handy with continuum

AT&T is $15 per phone for off contract phones and for AT&T Next. That means if you bring an unlocked phone the add on for a family plan is $15. $40 is only for subsidized phones until the contract runs out, then it drops to $15.

Wait wait wait wait....They charge you MORE if you don't buy a phone through them? That's ridiculous.

They don't, I've been buying my own phones for years on AT&T and I just pop my simm into my new phone and nothing changes except AT&T notices I have a different phone and lists my new phone under my devices in My AT&T account.. No fees or changes to my plan.. I've got 5 lines and done this with all of them.

There are some interesting comparisons of the 808 vs 810. Some even say the 808 is theoretically better because the 810 gets too hot and throttles more often. And then there is the 810 v2 or v2.1?
I'm not sure which 810 is in the 950XL.

I'd hope they would use the latest one but you never know. Do the manufacturers even sell the old version once a new version is released?

The latest version is.

There's only a few differences between them.
The Lumia 950 is slightly less powerful with the Snapdragon 808 hexa-core while the Lumia 950 XL has the Snapdragon 810 octa-core.
The Lumia 950 does not have liquid cooling, while the Lumia 950 XL does.
The Lumia 950 has a smaller 5.2 inch screen, while the Lumia 950 XL has a larger 5.7 inch screen.
The Lumia 950 has Gorilla Glass 3, while the Lumia 950 XL has Gorilla Glass 4.
The Lumia 950 has a differenct camera housing than the Lumia 950 XL.

There you have it. The Lumia 950 XL is about $100 better (and $100 more expensive). Really the only thing that should decide you is how big you like your phone. If you want a larger screen than the Lumia 950 XL is really your only choice. If you like smaller phones, then the Lumia 950 is the better choice.

you forgot the battery.

Well let's break it down here. At AT&T if you buy an unlocked device and then use it on your plan, they charge you $40 per line (on top of your data plan). If you buy a phone through AT&T Next, they only charge you $15 per line and then you have your phone payment (most flagships are around $25/month) which equals to about the same as bringing your own device.

So let's say you get a 950XL:

$650 + $40/month per line + your data plan (mine is $100 for 10gb)

Now let's say you get a 950 through AT&T Next:

$0 upfront (exluding taxes) + $15/month per line + $25/month phone payment + your data plan ($100)

Even if you use a credit card, you still have to pay more per line with an unlocked device (and then you still have your credit card payment). Either way Next is the cheaper option upfront, even though it probably costs more in the long run.

Why are you assuming $40 per line? off contract phones get that reduced. Because I have the 2gb plan its $25 per line. My total bill is 85, 30 for the plan and 50 for two lines, plus taxes.

I think the 950 XL looks nicer than the 950. That silver ring looks strange to me, I'd pick a 950 though, the XL is too big for me.

Yeah I like the camera bezel better on the XL, but I didn't like how big it was when I tried it out. I'm comforted a bit by the fact that the 810 seems a bit too hot for the platform. That and the 950 will fit in my shirt pocket :p I couldn't button the pocket when I put the XL in it. I usually put my phone in my shirt or jacket breast pocket when I go out on my motorcycle, so that's pretty important to me.

Because when I got my first phone through Next (the M8 on launch/announcement day), that's how they broke down the pricing. It was $40 per line with a $25 discount for using Next, bringing the total down to $15. That's the way they described it to me so that's what I assumed was going on. Either they changed it or I was wrong in assuming that's how it was.

I'm hoping some third party companies will come out with some vinyl wraps that include a ring around the camera. If no one does, I've thought about buying some vinyl and making my own. If done right, I think it could look better than the shiny metal ring (and it gives you a bit of customization on color and material style)

I am surprised with all who handled the demos when they were in the MS Stores no one checked out which processor was in it??

I never saw a 950 in stores here in Silicon Valley.

i kinda wish they had given the 950 a 1080p screen for better battery life (and lower cost).
