Hi guys,

following the wonderful thread:
http://forums.windowscentral.com/microsoft-lumia-950/447265-help-me-try-find-solution-microphones.html#post3602764

we may get some help (our forum friend mattiasnyc is helping us with a contact In Microsoft )

Asyou probably are aware, the 950/950XL has 4 microphones...and a very good ones:
HAAC - High Amplitude Audio Capture are the mics we have since the Nokia 808 pureview.

"Most microphones have a certain dynamic range ? one can be sensitive to the quietest sounds while another can tolerate extremely loud noises.
What is difficult to achieve, particularly in a mobile device where the component may only be 3-4 millimetres wide, is having a microphone that can be effective for both the quiet and loud parts of the sound.*" (taken from https://blogs.windows.com/devices/2013/04/09/make-a-lot-of-noise-for-nokias-haac-recording-technology/#omZ0YCod7jcqRkcp.97)"

In the Windows 8.1, we could use a feature called rich recording, which enable us to make directional recording (taking advantage of multi microphones of some Nokia models (almost all of them had more than 1 Mic).
In some models (930) with the 4mic we could have a bit more... 5.1 recording...with directional recording...it was a great feature.

Some info:

4mics capabilities:

So... after this introduction... what is the problem??:grincry:

Well... our 950/XL phones cannot use the functionality of the advertised 4 microphones.
On the 8.1, the camera app had the option to enable 5.1 recording (like it has also the option to use Dolby when using headphones) in the Nokia Hardware (the ones with the 4 Haac microphones, like the Lumia 930 and now 950 series).
there was great capabilities with this setup:
- Rich audio recording (taking advantage of the HAAC mics) with a high bitrate on the models with HAAC mics (920, 830, 930 etc...)
- 5.1 recording on the models with more than 2 mics (930 for example)

Microsoft launched the WIndows 10Mobile... and didn't enable the 4mics (only enable recording on 2 of them) and it lowered the bitrate to a low bitrate...
Now it records at:
192kbps 48.0 kHz (instead of 320kbps on the windows 8.1) 2channels, AAC, (LC)

Please up vote these two feedback sessions (up vote is only possible if we go to the feedback Hub with the phone)
Feedback Hub - Windows Insider Program

Please up vote these... we may get lucky :)

Thanks a lot to our forum friend to:mattiasnyc

Lumia 930, 950XL recorded video on Windows 10 - audio 256kbps 48.0 kHz, 2channels.
Old videos with 8.1 - edit 18.12.2016 19.23: 384/256kbps

Old videos with 8.1 - audio 642kbps

I'm afraid we don't have even those bitrates..
A video taken just moments ago:

Only 192kb/s 48 KHz, 2 Channels.... :-(

Seriously?? :)
it's even worst then with some Windows versions

Please tell me which Version you have?

I have:
Lumia 950XL - 10.0.14965.1001 (slow ring)
Lumia 930 - 10.0.14977.1000 (fast ring)

Let me try with my 930 and I'll give feedback in a couple of minutes :)

Lumia 930 - 10.0.14977.1000

So, it means that in some Windows 10M versions, we have different bitrates...because I can only have 192Kb/s on my both 950XL and 930 (both in window preview builds)

Lumia 930 : 10.0.14393.576
Lumia 950XL : 10.0.14393.576

Ok...so that's the explanation... the non-preview releases have a tad more quality...not much more, but it matters.

Hopefully we can have the 6 channels of sound soon...with a good quality!!

Did that ever get fixed on the 950 ? With the 830/930 you could always go back to Win 8.1 and get higher bitrates and surround back, but not on the 950...

Nope...still the same stereo with low bitrates...

So many lost opportunities to make a difference...

- Higher bitrates
- Surround Sound 5.1
- Awesome camera
- Multi photo in one photo
- Wireless charging
- Dual SIM which allow you to have 2 WhatsApp clients with 2 different numbers

All lost because of stupid decisions and weird join ventures to make the OS worst...

Still using the 950XL in a daily basis (I have two of them)...and still can't find a replacement with all the above qualities above on a device

Sorry to hear that, it's too bad the 950/950XL can't be downgraded to 8.1 like the 830 or 930.

Well you can still record lossless stereo audio with an app like "Audio Recorder Pro" I suppose but that's not the same as a video with directional sound.

Was this due to patenting lost back to Nokia, or some other licensing issue with the tech on Windows 10 Mobile? Just curious...or maybe lack/loss of Lumia firmware devs some where in mid flight of Windows 10 Mobile?

Lumia 950XL with Windows 10 Mobile, bitrate 256kbps
Lumia 950/950XL support Surround Sound 5.1 - registry enable.
