Good point. That could be anywhere from tomorrow until next year, unfortunately.
Latest build is already stable enough, just needs some minor fixing.

I mean it is already very good on a lot of phone models, why would you assume it is not even better on the two flagships they are targeting to for the november release.

Stop whining about your phone and look at the bigger picture...

Next year? You're being dramatic now..
There's no way Microsoft would announce a phone to come out in November and then have it come out next year. How does that make sense? It's not even November yet.

Look at how they released the 640. Announced in April we didn't get it in the u.s. Til june/july

Microsoft would be stupid to not have this ready by Black Friday. That's like 1/5th of the total income for all major retailers in the U.S.

I honestly don't get all the fuss. If you have a lumia 920/1020/Icon/1520 and you've been waiting YEARS to upgrade then what is the issue with one more month? Don't let your minds make Microsoft out as the bad guy. They said November so just be ready to jump when it's available.

I feel Microsoft is damned if you do or don't with all the whining in the W10M forums.

From what I'm seeing so far with the latest build they seem right on track. I wouldn't be surprised if they already have a release candidate at Redmond.

As I said in another thread, that was the fault of the American carriers. Maybe if they weren't so annoying, we could have had it before then.

If they're not up for pre order this week with a solid release date, I see no hope for these devices at all in US. (For whatever little hope they already have)

I cannot fathom how you can announce a new flagship product and give such an ambiguous amount of information as to when people can actually buy it.

I'm with you on that one. Look at the years of RIM/BB launching phones well after the hype wave has settled.

It's now November. MS has a couple days left before people start budgeting their holiday money elsewhere. A LOT of 950s and 950XLs are going to be triaged on a LOT of shopping lists. If MS doesn't want to start making Android phones just to stay in that market, they're going to have to be a bit less patient than BBRY and a bit more audacious and immediate like AAPL.

All these people screaming about it not being out yet make me hopeful that there is enough interest in Windows Phones to keep it alive.
Yes, all 8 of us would keep it alive... As the most inane fringe fandom of temporal masochists. "You make me wait SO hard, MS! MS, you make me SO frustrated. Frustrate me slower!"

As an aside, I have Multiple Sclerosis and my previous statement actually rings true if you sub-in one MS for the other.

Is it just me or are they horrible at announcing a phone and getting it available to buy/preorder in a reasonable time frame?

In this day and age, you can't announce something and then go a month or more before people can pre order or buy.... Why can't they figure this out?
In this day and age they can do whatever they like. Heck companies can release hardware that simply isn't ready for release and then NEVER, EVER, fix issues.

I think you can be a fan of MS and WP and still be critical. Let's face it. They've totally botched the launch of these phones. Given the situation WP is in MS cannot afford to be so nonchalant about these phones if they want them to succeed or even sell modestly. Maybe the most die hard fans will wait and hold on to get these phones regardless but what what about the fans teetering on the edge? It's just crazy the radio silence MS has gone to regarding these phones. No, "Hey, we hear you guys and know you are anxious but here's why we pulled the phones from the stores." or "Yes, you can still expect to get the phones in November" or what about? "Here are some official bundles"

When MS announced these phones almost a month ago I was ready to throw my money at MS despite my building frustrations. Now, I've had time to think about it and see how MS is handling the launch and platform and now I'm not sure if I'm willing to invest anymore time into what appears to be a platform MS is willing to let whither on the vine.

Of course maybe I'm just the type of customer MS wants. Even if I do leave WP I'll still use their services. They just won't have to build and maintain a whole OS for me to use the services. Win win for them.

    They haven't launched yet...

Pre-orders from day 1 would have been nice, but, they didn't tell us when they were coming out, and they didn't tell us when if ever we would be able to pre-order them, if I recall correctly. I'm dying to get my hands on one, too, but MS haven't botched anything.

They actually did say on Oct 6th when they were announced they would be available in November. No specific date. Just "November".

Could be like when the federal govt payed contractors who were late on the 42nd (or similar) of a month so we taxpayers would get cheated out of the late penalties. So, for example, a Christmas release would be November 55th.

Weren't demos of the Lumia 950 and 950XL supposed to be available at Microsoft Stores? I was in one store last week and they were nowhere to be found.

When it comes to Windows Phone, Microsoft doesn't seem to do a particularly good job of riding momentum and timing their releases for maximum impact. That said, this time around I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference. Outside of Windows Central I haven't seen a whole lot of attention devoted to either of these phones. I bet your average consumer has no clue that these phones are on the way.

What's critical is that these phones do get released early enough that consumers haven't already locked in to other devices, that they're heavily advertised and that they're actually available in stores.

That last bit is the most critical, by far. One of the biggest blunders in promoting Windows Phone, at least in the United States, is that you can't find the damn phones anywhere. You had to be really committed if you wanted to get your hands on one. Your average consumer already naturally gravitates towards iPhones and Samsung Galaxies, so making Lumias are to find isn't helping Microsoft's cause at all.

The 950xl was on display for a week or two. I was told they got sent back because they weren't the same version of the phone that will be released. But it sounded like the store wouldn't have new demo units until they are actually available to consumers.

Yeah they were for a bit. I went a few days after the conference and got to play around with a 950XL. No 950's, though. I messed with that phone for over an hour, though, and was thoroughly sold.

Look, here's the deal - October 6 was a Surface event. In other words it was timed to the Surface delivery schedule, not the Windows 10 mobile timetable. Still, the event visibility was too good to pass up and it was close enough to the W10 Phone release to use it.

The 950 can't be released without W10 Mobile which is still set for late November / early December.

Both the mobile and HoloLens projects piggybacked on the Surface press day and neither were promised immediately. They have been shown to the industry press, but there have been no consumer announcements or commercials because the products aren't yet ready.

When MS gives a release date and then misses it, then we can complain loudly. Until that happens, there is no news here.

So let's all start taking bets on which comes first, Holo lens or the 950 series.

I have to say it wasn't just a surface event as you easily leave out the band2 section, that makes it multiple device.

Their game plan is foolish and frustrating even for microsoft store staff.

Announcing availability in all other country's while limiting themselves so severely in the US and being so severely top secret is ridiculous.

The fact that this company has no dedicated windows support staff just email/website post questions in forums is a telling sign of mobiles priority in Redmond.

Once again I mention the hundreds of millions thrown at the NFL to promote surface and still on Thursday night games the guys are joking about ipads.
We had better see some of the most epic commercials ever when these phones are launched Mr project manager

iPad Pro, anyone? Announced Sept 9. Available yet? No. Available pre-order? No. Available this month? Yes. Specific date? No (just rumors).

    Apple: free pass.

I get it, they should get these phones out 'sooner than later' but it's not so much the OS wasn't finished as waiting for TH2 to be finished and the iris scanner. I have said multiple times that

    (a) They were going to ship early, no iris scanner, gets an OTA update...sometime in the future (hello, carriers)
    (b) They wait until Hello is ready and ship all at once

Well, those chose (b) and now they are waiting on AT&T to finalize things. They'll likely go for the 11/20 due to the holiday and that gives a few weeks to put it all together.

Saying release it earlier isn't that interesting. For fans, earlier is always better. But Microsoft had that end-of-October timeframe and hey, they got the SP4, SB, and Band 2 out the door--at least in the US. Of course, I would have preferred those wait until November too, especially the Book, which has bugs. But no carriers, so...here they are.
