Is it safe to buy a 512 MB Windows Phone? Will it get all the future updates (8.5/9etc)?

I am planning to buy Lumia 520. I am on a budget and it is a great phone but for a bit more money I can get 525 with 1 GB of RAM. I have heard that their performance is identical except on some heavy graphics games, which is fine for me. But, can 512 MB WP phones handle future updates?
I am scared that if I buy a 512 MB phone, since I am planning to keep it for a few years, I won't end up with the same fate as the early faithful WP7 buyers. I will buy a windows phone on the promise of future updates from Microsoft and don't want to be restricted to 8.1.

No. Go for 1GB ram. Performance is lot better on 1 GB ram compared to 512 mb ram. Almost no ' resuming...' screen after WP 8.1 update.

Buddy first of all no one will guarantee you whether all wp8 device will be update to wp9.
Whereas all wp8 device will be update to wp8.5 but not sure though.
Go for 525 as due to 1gb ram and as salmanmansuri told there is no resuming screen after 8.1 so better go for 525 and most games now require 1gb ram so 525 will be best choice for now.

go for 635 or 630 (512MB) or 620(screen size smaller, also 512mb), with compass and some sensor, 52x dont have these.
720(1GB) would be the choice too.
also 52x and 625 dont have glance screen and clearblack screen
if you want a basic phone, then go for 525 or 625

The brand new 630 which (I think) isn't even out yet, is have 512mb RAM, so... I don't think they release a phone without "future".

512 is minimum, now we have 2gb phones and I heard about 3gb already. ao if you want to play all games in the next year and use 100% of apps, go for 1gb. Its safer

It would be a suicide for WP if they stop supporting 512mb, more than 80% of their users are there. What developer would support the platform if they can't target most of their users. It would be like starting from scratch. Besides, the market is already mature in the high end, the growth and the opportunity is in the next billion users that are in the low end.

I think the support for 512mb is guaranteed in 8.5 and 9.

MS guarantees that a phone would be supported up to 36 months from its launch date. Possibly only for nokia, htc, samesung ones. The new OEMS, i doubt they can handle that much.

520 is nice, but I'd say buy a 525, it can handle desktop sites much better, and though performance is equal, 525 would have a clear lead when you do any amount of multitasking.

Good idea. You never know if an app you want might require 1GB of RAM and the extra power is always better to have than not have it all.

In WP8.1 I now get web pages reloading far more often than WP8 which indicates much greater ram usage. That's even WITH a 1gig phone. It won't be long before 1gig is the min spec, so I would not go for 512 in a new phone.

MS guarantees support for 512 devices doesn't mean all the apps support 512mb!!!
At least 1gb is saver for the next 2 years, say what you want. Its a fact.

For an at most cost of $60 it would not matter to me at all whether or not my $60 phone would get updates that haven't even been announced yet. People buy Android phones for several hundred knowing they most likely will not be getting updates at the end of 2 years.

That`s because average consumers don`t care about updates.
