According to the article (I didn't read the filing itself), the patent covers two things
1. Making the body of the watch removable for charging, connecting to a computer and to allow the strap to be cleaned. A good idea perhaps, but hardly a critical feature of the smart watch.
2. Something vague about displaying biometric measurements on a watch. The article isn't specific enough to allow us to judge these claims, but the general concept is certainly not new. BTW, a drawing (as shown in the article) provides background information in a patent - it's the claims that are written down that matter.

Filing a patent does not mean a company will make a product that uses that patent.
