I was thinking why not when W10 is released that MS just have 4 models.

1) Low end - 4" screen,ips
2) Mid range - 4.5"- 4.7" screen, 720p,ips
3) High end - 5"-5.2" screen,1080p,amoled, water resistant
4) High end- phablet - 5.5"-6" screen,1080p,amoled, water resistant

Low end - 8gb internal storage, quad core proc- low end, sd card - 32 gb max, ffc - low end,

Mid range - 16/32/64 internal storage, quad core proc - right above low end, sd card - 64gb max, ffc - 2mp, qi charging,

High end - 32/64/128 internal storage, quad core - high end, sd card - 128 max, ffc - 5mp or >, qi charging,

Can't think of anything else right now but these could be the simple criteria to differentiate the various models offered by MS Mobile. Name them if you want so as by doing that it would be clearly known what it can and cannot do with respect to hardware.

Because the press would then point out that Windows Phone only has four phones in the range and immediately label the system as a complete failure.

People want a choice of sizes and features, which is what Microsoft are doing.

The Asian market, especially where contractual deals are non-existent, needs those in-between phones (upper low-end, lower mid-end, upper mid-end)

That's a valid reason for this plethora of devices

Take note I said from MS Mobile and not everyone. So how do you explain IPhone having 2 sizes. 6 and 6+, given that all other models are the same without anything taken from them only added. The diff between the 4s and the 5 is the screen size as is with the 6 and 6+. So since WP isn't doing so well why would the media have a field day on hardware when they've already given up on it.

Apple's viewpoint is that they produce the best device they can and price it accordingly. If you can't afford an iPhone, you're out of luck.

I like the idea.
But you have to remember that MS have chumps in the marketing/product decision roles.
Samsung are shipping lots of kit by having dozens of SKUs.
MS either needs to go down that path or differentiate on something, or carry on with their heads in the sand.
