Sorry to say, Iphones are really not flagships (in comparison to the competition) they are just trendsetters :p.

How are you finding your 535?
The term refers to a warship that represents the rest of the fleet. Later, it became a word to refer to the best product in an industry or company, either by popularity or perceived quality. The iPhone is a flagship because it represents Apple.
From Wikipedia

"A flagship is a vessel used by the commanding officer of a group of naval ships, reflecting the custom of its commander, characteristically a flag officer, flying a distinguishing flag. Used more loosely, it is the lead ship in a fleet of vessels, typically the first, largest, fastest, most heavily armed, or best known.

Over the years, the term "flagship" has been borrowed in metaphorical form by industries such as broadcasting, automobiles, cell phones, education, national airlines, breweries and retailing to refer to their highest profile or most expensive products and outlets."

Really liking the 535, a few wee frustrations as the windows apps on the iPhone have more functionality, however I know this will change on windows phone 10. Does everything I want it to extremely well, so good bargain for me.

now that we know the specs of Samsung S6, i hope MS would give us something similar to McLean or gold-finger the once rumoured devices,
i am waiting to upgrade from 920 to 1020 successor.

Good to hear  and you do get a lot of bang for your buck with the 535 :).

That is generally the case with most of the popular apps unfortunately.

Anyway the 535 will serve you well until you choose to move onto the next model :).

Reaallly? :grincry:

Lets agree to disagree, otherwise I can see this thread being completely derailed and I will not be responsible for that. On that note there will be no further discussion from my side :).

The answer's pretty easy for me. It should have a top-of-the-line SoC for the current market (in this case, SD 810). Beyond that, it should include everything useful from the previous iteration, with advancements added, when applicable. That means keeping wireless charging and 32 GB of internal storage, taking IPS LCD at 1080p for the display, and having a 20-MP camera with image quality on-par with the previous device, if not better. The battery should be a bit larger, and the battery life should be noticeably better.

My Lumia 1520.
It's a Flagship with all the cannon's and ammo aboard to blast all of the competition out of the water.
I will stay with it untill i have Windows 10 on it, and if Microsoft by then hasn't got another "6 inch machine i don't bother buying anything else.
I am still in love with the thing.

right, there is no point of arguing. Some like fast, some like slow.

I am not sure you realised what I was driving at.

I mean that, I am aware WP can be more frugal than others, but frugality has no place in my flagship. Flagships are not designed for those that want a slow phone. WP has them covered already, and in abundance.

My 1520 and my wife's 1020 had a lot of nice features and while they are still being sold I don't want to go back to either for the next os release.

The m8 I am currently using will suffice for now until I get to see if Microsoft is going to surprise me with a new device that has everything I expect in a flagship phone.

I would like to believe that the folks there have seen and heard enough people here in the USA complaining about the lack of one to know that it is wanted and people like myself are waiting for some information about what they plan on releasing before buying something else. It's all well and good to say that they will but another thing entirely to know for sure.

We all are on the same page here as to what we think a flagship phone should have and I hope that those who are responsible for getting one into production are as well.

With all of advances that have been made in technology since the 1020 and even the 1520 have been out it will be interesting to see what Microsoft decides to do.

Will they go with what everyone else is using today, or something like the new Intel Soc? I am very curious to know this.

I think being able to have the best camera, gpu, screen resolution and color representation along with the best sound and connectivity should be what they focus on to be able to make sure that any xbox game or movie be as good as any phone available. Camera lens and software has really advanced and WP has always been great but Samsung Sony Lecia has pushed beyond the Lumia. It's time for it to regain the top dog status IMHO.

There is so much I would love to see implemented but I am afraid that the bean counters there will keep it from really happening.

We have all heard the negativity and seen the bad press and I truly believe that a flagship phone that blows both the iPhone and any Android phone out of the water on the spec's that could do full xbox games at the highest frame rates with the highest resolutions and the best sounds will sell more than any other WP and do more for the platform than releasing a dozen new low end devices ever could. It would change the perception of the tech writers, gamers, and general public by showing that Microsoft while not having the amount of apps they other guys have has a phone they could only wish for. If they could build one or two like this and get the tech sites drooling about them people will stand up and take notice.

This is something I have wanted for a long time... ever since I heard about merging the desktop to the mobile phone years ago with Windows. It's taken so long to be able to make it a reality though. It's going to be a hard sell to ever see it happen if folks lose faith that it can be and if those who can make it happen loose sight of this too.

IDK... it may only be a pipe dream of mine and never happen but I was always taught that if you don't at least try you will never know your full potential.

I have a slightly contrarian opinion.

Based on what I see with the 535, 640 and 640XL, I think MSFT will probably get the next 8XX and 9XX devices right. I don't know if they will work hard to create a niche 10xx or 15xx device or not.

The iPhone 6 and 6+ are perfect examples of not having a SnapDragon 810 equivalent or 2+GB of RAM or 20MP camera etc and still wowing the customers and selling the devices in droves.

The idea is to create a harmonious blend of design, software and features that wow the consumer/customer. There is always a certain class that will not be happy due to the lack (perceived or otherwise) of apps.

I think though with SD810, 2GB RAM, 5" screen, 1080p, Glance, 2750 mAh battery, 5MP selfie camera, 20MP main camera with OIS, xenon flash, physical camera buttons, wireless charging, metal band frame (like the 830) and multi-color/material finish back would make a very nice device.

Waterproofing would be nice but not a dea lbreaker.

Oddly, and I know the purists won't agree, but I would not want to have a xenon flash, if it meant I couldn't use my phone as a torch.

The only thing I'm looking for in a successor to my Lumia Icon is a Windows flagship that has killer battery life. The Icon simply does not deliver in that category which is very disappointing to me.

As far as everything else goes (hardware wise), I'm glad that Microsoft will be using the latest and greatest Snapdragon CPU/GPU. That alone I think can go a long way in wowing people, as well as a good amount of RAM. If the phone is 5", stick with 1080p. There's zero sense in going to a 2K display. If it's a 6" phone, then go with 2K. Microsoft also needs to hit it home with the camera and they need to let everyone know that no one in the business does it better than them.

I also hope hope HOPE HOPE HOPE HOPE they go with a polycarbonate unibody design like the "classic" Nokia Lumia devices (800, 900, 920, 1020, etc). I'm a huge fan of that design for a lot of reasons like that it feels wonderful in the hand, and it's FAR from feeling or looking cheap. The way that the curved edges flow with the curved sides is amazing. I'd take it over a metal design. It's something that sets Lumias apart, and when you see a device with that styling, you immediately think of a Lumia. Though I won't hold my breath that Microsoft will go with this design

As a Navy vet, I was on a Flagship. USS Nassau, LHA-4- Amphibious monster. Admirals and USMC Generals always onboard. With all the other brass that came with them. Trust me- Cell Phone Flagships are way more fun.

Not sure I get what direction this thread is headed. Is it to define what a Hero WP should be, or if WP needs one? Seems like we are debating both here.

I splurged on the HTC One M8 for Windows because I wanted a Hero WP. I want a top end display res, a great processor, and a top end experience. Of course I understand it does nothing for photo Bugs, but otherwise it is a Flagship. I love the performance of this bad boy. And after kicking around the L920 for a while, I am a bigger believer than ever it makes a difference.

As for if Windows needs a phone Flagship- the answer is yes if you are ever looking to make 10% or better in sales in established markets such as North America and most of Europe.

In my mind the first sentence here is an excellent description of a flagship. That's where the iPhone excels. The specs are average at best, but the overall experience is top notch. Indeed, it is "a harmonious blend of design, software and features".

I think WP's biggest weakness is described in your 2nd sentence. Hardware is not WP's problem; had that been the case, the partnership with Nokia would have solved it. WP's current Achilles heel is software, both the OS and the app ecosystem.

I am hearing a lot about "flagships" lately, a state of the art device with the latest tech.
Same story last year and the years before that.
To what end?
What can it do more than last year device?
And do you realy need or use al that?
What purpuse does it has when you have a 5ghz octacore with 10 gb ram,
whow look what i got????????

Its not about specs, its about functionality.
Ow shure its nice to have a Ferrari at your front door, it runs very fast...........but thats the only thing it can.
I rather go for a old escort clipper, atleast i can pul a smal trailer behind it and have a huge trunck for al my stuf.
And with that old car i can take al those speedbumbs and without worries.
Not to mention that it can take more miles on a galon.

I had a few droidphones, lateron i got me a little 520 and now a 1320.................and guess what, i do exacly the same things with it.
The same thing as my friends does with there iphones, Samsungs and Htc's.
The only reason why i should get me an other phone or upgrade is a better camera ( but i knew that before i bought it ).
It doesnt need to be faster, it runs all i need.
It got extra storage thats nice and i use it a lot, it doesn't have NFC but i have no use for it so that doesn't bother me.
I would like to see stylus support on the larger phones and waterproof models.
But it doesn't need to be faster.
So it comes al to functionality.

I don't need a flagship, i need a tank.
Durable, trustworthy and above all.....functional.

Flagship is a phone that has things customers desire the most at a price point people are willing to pay for.

To me the 640XL is a flagship phone.

There are many people who really don't understand what a true flagship phone " can" do. It's not that everyone has the same needs or desires but for what it can bring to those who want and need it do.

Many people want the fastest processors largest batteries highest resolutions best sounds greatest cameras and some don't. If you are perfectly happy with the performance of whatever devices you use, then that is perfectly fine , however your opinion is not mine or anyone else who wants and needs more.

A flagship phone, especially like I want, is going to cost a lot and I am willing to pay for the privilege of having it. Some people think that this is somehow wrong and I should be willing to settle for less and I am not sure why? It's certainly not a waste of money to me as long as I am happy.

I saw mention of the iPhone being a flagship phone, and in part it is the best they produce but it is the only phone they offer and even they could have offered higher spec's but chose not to. They feel it isn't necessary...... What I find objectionable is they don't offer a choice to the individual except for accessories, colors and on board storage... A take it or leave it approach so to speak that I choose not to deal with. Wp could drop to 1% market share and it wouldn't change my mind on my preference for a flagship phone. Millions love the iPhone and I have no issues with this... that's what makes them happy,.....

I am willing to bet cold hard cash that if Microsoft built a flagship phone like I want and had it available for sale the day it came out on all of the carriers with some really good advertising and marketing that market share blues would go away. I know it would.

Maybe that's what they are planning.... If so by this time next year it is going to be really cool to use a Windows phone and the app gap will become a thing of the past since everyone will want one ... Heck in a few years... we'll look back and say.... "Do you remember when they said WP was dead"... Lol

Cry me a river then build a bridge and get over it
