When I say Microsoft TV, I mean just that. A tv that is the one-stop-shop (or in this case, appliance) for all the family's entertainment needs.

A tv that may appear just like that of any other flat screen tv, but has xbox software and all its awesomeness, possible touch-screen technology (perhaps for the higher-end models), WiFi etc. fully integrated.

So no need for any peripherals ie. dusty xbox console lingering near by with unsightly tangled hdmi cables; just your Microsoft TV and a wireless router is all you need for awesome entertainment!

I can't possibly be the only one thinking about this. Come on Microsoft, the time is now. Oh, and I'd be more than happy to test out any prototypes available :-)

That sounds a lot like the Xbox One to me. The XBO has DVR support incoming, supports almost every medium on the planet (local, streaming and physical discs) and did I mention it was a gaming console running Windows 10, possibly with the ability to run Universal Apps in the future? Turning all of the above into a television would reduce the possible audience that would buy something like an Xbox - why would you buy a Microsoft TV that does (similar) things to the Xbox, when you can't retrofit your current TV and have to buy an entirely new TV + media player setup. It's much easier for consumers to add something to their existing setup then to force them to re-jig home theatres. The XBO already controls other devices with the IR blasters in the Kinect anyways.

I can understand your logic with a one-thing-replaces-all solution, but even if they didn't package a full XBO into the TV and just included entertainment things I wouldn't see the point over a regular TV.

The Xbox One was originally marketed as the all in one entertainment device but the gamers freaked out and Microsoft backed off. There is no reason the Xbox or PS4 for that matter shouldn't be a central hub for home entertainment. Windows 10 coming to the Xbox should help facilitate this with Cortana and PC game streaming. The biggest threat at this time are the rumored features of the revamped Apple TV, the supposed gaming capabilities could be a killer feature or it could be a waste, depends on the games. At the rumored price point I don't see it being able to play AAA titles but it could play casual games, personally I'm not sure how games intended for a phone or tablet will scale to a +50 in TV.

Building peripherals into a TV screen is a risky proposition. They will get stale before the TV will, and people will gripe at having to plunk down $1000-3000 to replace their TV just because the new Xbox came out and that makes their entire screen obsolete.

I guess the main thing is that not everyone wants to be able to touch their TV all the time. It's like going back to the 70s when you had to press buttons on the TV to change channel.

Technically we've always kinda had Windows TV. HTPCs and whatnot.

Just built a NUC and threw W10 on it to dispose of my Roku, and a much stronger mini ITX bringing steam and Xbox for Windows games to my TV

Not needed, Microsoft has the XBOX ONE for that, plus in November it is releasing DVR capability for both cable and TV Tuner.

X1 is a rather large set top box for that when the vision for this mythical Microsoft TV looks a lot more like a Roku, Apple TV, PlayStation TV or Intel NUC.
