If you're able to get the SB for less at Best Buy, and get a gift card, plus the dock. Yes, I'd go for that, I opted for the MS deal, because I got a good price from their EDU store, and a 30 day return, so I could fully evaluate with this laptop is good for me.

Well typically MS is offering 150 off on certain models and the rotate each week. I bought mine at the MS store the i5 256 8 gb DGPU for 1899 - 150 = 1749. They did ask if i wanted the docking station free instead of the 150 off. But that deal your getting is better but I like the MS support with no question asked just swap it out for a new one for 2 years at the MS store.

Surface Book is one machine. Surface Pro is another. Neither is currently on a "2" iteration. Surface Pro 2 is old. Surface Book is a first gen device. Some folks really need to pay more attention to what device they're actually looking at ...

Oh I know, but it really gets confusing when people call the Surface Book the "Surface Book Pro" (been seeing this a lot, I'm guessing it has to do with the MacBook Pro naming scheme). Problem is, there is a Surface Pro and a Surface Book and when you combine the names, it gets ridiculous. People really should read more carefully or just flat out pay better attention to details (especially when they're considering plunking down about $2,000 after tax and when asking for advice or technical help about a device). Imagine that support session ... the support rep thinks the customer has a Surface Book and tells them to use the button on the keyboard to detach the clipboard, but the customer has a Surface Pro ... that could very well be a hilariously frustrating exchange for both parties. All because the customer hasn't a clue about what he/she owns.

The name of the device is the Surface Book, not the Surface Book Pro or Surface Book Pro 2. It's pretty straightforward.

In any case that is not a great price. You can find near new ones with warranty on fleabay for around 1200 with the nividia gpu. 128gb models around 1100 new.

I always use PayPal and only buy products located here in the US. Pretty good protection if you do that.

There are lots of totally trustworthy sellers on eBay. I should know, I am one. You just have to be very very cautious and know your rights and the rules. For one, PayPal can and will only refund money that's in the seller's account. I had friends who got completely screwed this way. The old trick was after not shipping at all or shipping the "wrong" item (empty package with tracking #), sellers would simply empty their PP account. PayPal couldn't take money from your bank account or CC without authorization, so the buyer would get screwed. At that point, you'd have to file a chargeback with your CC to get your money back (and you should -- PayPal used to try to prevent you from doing this by saying it was a breach of the agreement you make when you sign up, but I don't know of many who lost their PP accounts over chargebacks).

Today, you use eBay's buyer protection program instead of PayPal, which is pretty much 100% guaranteed to go in favor of the buyer unless the seller can prove otherwise (and a scammer seller won't be able to). The burden of proof is now on the seller, pretty much all the time. ;) eBay's own reps have admitted that their buyer protection claim system is set up to favor the buyer automatically when the buyer files a claim and escalates it to eBay for review. Google it if you don't believe me ...

So yeah, you can trust eBay. But be smart about it. ;)

Got my i5 SB, 256gb, 8gb, DGPU from Best Buy for an effective price of $1,250 this week. MicroCenter had them on sale for $350 off. I got Best Buy to match that. That brought it down to $1,550. Best buy had a $150 gift card with purchase of Surface Book promotion going. This brings the effective price down to $1,400. I got a 10% off deal by using my Best Buy card (a promo they had going). This brings the effective price down to $1,250. $650 off!

I think the deals have begun on the Surface Books (and Pro's) as the October 26 event approaches (Kaby Lake refresh?) and the version 2 refresh approaches (next Spring?)

There is no such thing as a Surface Book Pro. Microsoft makes a Surface Pro 3, a Surface Pro 4 and a "Surface Book" there is no Pro label attached to any Surface Book.
