I think so,too. But Microsoft is hinders the Surface 2 in some ways, like removing Ethernet drivers so that it cannot be connected to LAN via USB to Ethernet dongle. If they remove such limitations it would be more acceptable.

An iPad fan boy just sent me this. http://www.cnbc.com/id/101040815
Its just sad. Poor journalism and a lack of marketing savvy, even though he works for CNBC. This is why Microsoft cannot win. The tech press loves Apple. It isn't enough to love Apple, but they feel obligated to hate or feel contempt for MS. "You cannot succeed. We won't let you no matter how good a product you make."

People said the same when the iPad launched. ;)

People were wrong. It sold. Every generation of it since, sold.

The first gen rt did not.

It will be interesting how this pilot plan works out though. Pun intended. Flip charts and manuals work without batteries.

The iPad was a completely different launch scenario. One of the biggest factors people seem to forget is that Apple already had demand for the device and given awareness. Apple had been producing hardware like the iPhone and iPod for a decade, not to mention MacBook, etc.

Microsoft has been out of the hardware business for a long time. Other than the Xbox, no one recognizes them as a hardware company.

When Microsoft launched the Surface, they had enormous obstacles to overcome...

1) Delivery logistics. Retail shelf space and relationships needed to be created.
2) Consumer awareness, no one outside the tech industry knew about it. And with lack of access in retail locations, people had to actually seek buying one.
3) Completely new and unfamiliar product. Windows 8 was an unknown. iOS on iPad was same as iPhone.
4) Lack of cult following. Apple has seriously obsessed fans. They will flock to buy anything new from Apple.
5) New version of new product. People were just getting used to the idea of a tablet as a companion devices. The Surface (even the RT) is really designed to be a replacement device. Most people could completely replace their desktop with a Surface. Most people don't understand that concept. And Microsoft's first release wasn't really there yet.
6) Complete lack of apps and ecosystem. Obviously Apple got this pretty quick after launch.

Microsoft has an uphill battle right now. IMO, the Surface and Surface Pro are 2-3 years ahead of the market. People still see tablets as companions only. But time will mature this market, and businesses begin to adopt the hardware as replacement devices, as will consumers.
