I forget but I read somewhere about support for files like .MKV and other video formats for Windows, I'm just not sure if it was already implemented or is it something that Windows 10 will bring to the table? Will my Surface 3 be able to play my videos? Probably have to use VLC app?

Current versions of Windows (Win 7/8/8.1) do not have native support for MKV files. However, there are tons of apps that support the codec. Like VLC, Media Player Classic etc. Windows 10 however, has native support for MKV. So when Surface 3 is officially updated to Windows 10, MKV will be fully supported.
