Continuum with Type Cover 1 and 2

I did a pretty sweet upgrade from the Surface 2 to the Surface 3, and instead of forking out more for the Surface 3 Type Cover, I have been using my Type Cover 2, primarily - and my Type Cover 1 sometimes (like right now).

Anyway - I was pretty exciting that I would switch back and forth between desktop and tablet with removing the type cover, but it hasn't been working. Does anyone know if this is just for the Surface 3 Type Cover? It would seem pretty obvious that it is, but why doesn't it work with the other covers? Same connection, similar drivers? Anyone have any luck getting continuum to work with the older type covers?

I have the Surface Pro 2, and when I undock and remove the keyboard (Type/Touch Cover 2), it asks if I want to go into Tablet Mode.

Why are there 2 threads on this?

I have a Surface 3 as well as 2 Surface Pro 2 machines. I only have Type Cover 2 keyboards (3 of them). I use it for the Surface 3 and when I remove the keyboard, it does prompt me if I want to switch modes. There is also an option to have it automatically switch but I prefer the prompt and left it at that option.
