Hi I'm just curious if there is much difference between getting the surface pro or the surface pro 2. Is there any major benefit of the newer one over the older one?

One big noticeable difference will be the battery life. This is a big deal to me, because I like to use my Surface while traveling, and if it won't even last for the full flight so I can watch a couple of movies, I'm bummed. There should also be significant performance improvements as well, but only time will tell, as the only benchmarks I've seen appeared to be flawed. Also, in my case, I'm moving up to a 256GB drive with 8GB of RAM, which should help my performance with Photoshop.

I would only be getting 64 gb I think. I don't really have any major need for it, I just want one that will replace my laptop/new iPad.

Also I should asked is it worth getting a keyboard for it? I don't use one on my iPad and don't find it to much of a big deal.

It'll come down to how you intend to use it. Better battery life and two stage kickstand for better angle/viewing on your lap are the main improvements. Some people are always near a plug. Some people never put it up on their lap. Personally, those were the two biggest gripes I have with the Surface Pro. Lastly, it depends on how much you're getting the Surface Pro for compared to Pro 2. If the difference is $100 then no question go for Pro 2. If the difference is $300-400 then you have a quandary on your hands.

I've been contemplating this exact dilemma...im considering a 128gb so looking at both pro models and wondering if its worth the possible $200-300 difference between 1 and 2, 128 model. The battery life is important, but the processor for performance and kickstand correction make the difference for me so far. The screen being almost identical makes the choice a little harder.

I need the Surface Pro 2 for the battery life and legacy apps but I wish it came in the Surface 2 form factor.

I will be mainly using it for sites such as this, a stock website and my banking/investing. I will also use it to load up leaked OS for my mobile device. I would be buying brand new so I don't think I will be getting more than the 100 dollars. Also while I was comparing between pro 1and 2 I noticed that the 2 doesn't have hdmi support but the 1st one does. Is this correct or maybe just missing info on website. It isn't a big deal to me to have it I just thought it was weird that a first edition would have that feature but the second wouldn't. Anyways thanks for the responses. It would seem that for 100 dollars difference I'm probably better to go with the surface pro 2.

In terms of handling your workload either one would suffice. If you tend to use the device in a portable or mobile manner then the longer battery in the Pro2 tips the scale. Same goes if you envision yourself ever using it on your lap.

Both versions have mini Display Port not HDMI. Pro2 has v1.2 which allows daisy chaining multiple monitors.

Oh ok great thanks for the clarification on the hdmi issue. I think the better battery would be good I like to have the freedom.

I think we all wish it was lighter like a Surface 2. One or two more gens and im sure we will be at that point.

Yeah, for them same SSD size a $300 difference between Pro 1 & 2 would be a tough decision. For me $100-200 savings would not be enough to go with Pro 1. The battery and kickstand improvements in Pro 2 are easily worth it since they would benefit me on a daily basis. So much so that I'm even considering getting the Pro 2 even though I already have the Pro 1.

im saying a 200-300 difference assuming the remaining Pro1 stock will potentially take a price drop to release stock...but that's far fetched. As it stands right now, its only a 100 difference which I agree its just more sensible to get a Pro 2, which is most likely what I'll get. Its good to know the improvements are a big deal for even someones who's got an original Pro :)
