So I purchased an i5 Surface Pro (2017) during the Christmas sales and so far i'm loving it. Probably my favorite device in a long time. it replaced a MacBook Pro and iPad. love having only one deice instead of two.

Anyway, I'm looking to get a second AC Adapter for my travel bag. I see that Microsoft sells two versions. A 65w ($75) and a 102w ($100). My Surface Pro came with a 65w. is there any benefit to getting the 102w? Will it charge faster? if so would it be noticable and worth the extra money? Does anyone use the 102w with there Surface Pro?

thank you

Let me know how you like it. How you feel about quality and durability compered to the Microsoft adapter. I saw the on amazon but i'm skeptical about third party adapters. Bad experience.

Thanks, I will probably try one of these. I won't be using it often but I like to have 2 chargers. One for my bag and one for the house. In this use case I have a hard time dropping the $80 for the Microsoft one.

IMO, the best solution for a travel or secondary AC charger would be a USB-to-Surface adapter/dongle. For example, with a USB-C to Surface dongle I could charge my Surface Pro using the same charger that I carry in my backpack for my Pixel 2 XL.

Microsoft insisted that this dongle would be coming in 2017, but nothing....

Great idea but the pixal charger that comes with it is an 18w, half the watts of the surface pro adapter. I'm not certain that it would even keep the charge while using it. It would also take twice as long to charge it when not using it.

I think this is the one down fall of USB-C. For those that don't know that the wattage matters when charging larger devices like laptops.

I just recently upgraded from an SP3 to the SP (2017). I found out the old 65W AC adapter does not work with the SP (2017).

I have the i7, 8GB, 256GB SP (2017) and evidently it needs more power than my old SP3, i5, 4GB, 128GB.

I used the old SP3 charger with my SP5 (2017) it worked fine, maybe a bit slower but worked all the same. This was a few months back however the SP3 is now gone to my niece.

I read a while ago, that the more powerful SP2017s (i.e. i7 variants) had a problem with the older AC adapter. When I used mine, it said it was plugged in, but not charging. Also, the AC adapter was noticeably hotter than normal. It never got that hot when used it on my SP3.

For the record, the Surface Dock works great. I use it at work and have no problems with it.
