I'm not sure but most probably they are using Bluetooth 4.0 which means they both have very low energy consumption. So your battery life won't be effected too much...

I think you had the choice of linking the pen with the tablet, I vividly remember syncing the pen with the tablet (I can't remember off hand if its Bluetooth you sync the pen with) during setup, so I suppose you could skip this step, and not link the pen, but I would check with other people first!

    Hope this helps!

Yes the pen is Bluetooth and yes you can choose leave Bluetooth off and not to pair the pen with the SP3; or you can pair the pen, then turn Bluetooth off when not being used.

In either case, I don't think you will see a difference in battery life.

Imho once you get the SP3 you'll love the pen and your question becomes obsolete 😉

just got it but still downloading updates
i will probably use the pen but i often need to send note to others and use them for write a document, so if i hand write i need to retype them unless ONE note OCR is very very good, but i'm italian so not sure is as same level as for english

OneNote's OCR is very good, at least for English, and it works pretty good with my poor handwriting. I don't know how well it works for other languages. Let us know how it works out for Italian.

Don't know how it works, but I think It 'shuts down' when you turn the Surface off, due to there being no Bluetooth connection, you could completely disable the pen by taking out the small batteries housed near the purple button on the pen

Here's a snippet about how it works.

Active capacitive pen. When we talk about pens and styluses, we typically discuss two types: Electromagnetic and capacitive (which is more rightly called passive capacitive), where the former is superior and the latter is no better than using your finger. Surface Pen is a third type, called an active capacitive pen, and is similar to the technology used on Microsoft's Perceptive Pixel displays. An active capacitive pen requires batteries—see below—but in trade you get much better precision ("parallax"), consistent and accurate pressure sensitivity, more buttons, and excellent palm detection, among other improvements.

The battery is required because it is "active capacitive." The Bluetooth is required for the button on the end, which can be used to activate OneNote (single click) or for clipping out portions of the screen into OneNote (double clicking).
