Still issues with dock and extra screen

Hi.. I've had this problem for what seems an eternity. When I close the dock my external monitor won't turn on.. I have to undock and re dock so many times. Then sometimes the screen just starts flashing. It's a nightmare.
I'm running a cable which has dvi one side and the micro display connection the other. No adapter in the link. Does anyone have any ideas how to improve it?
