What is wrong with SP4 Continuum?

Continuum doesn't really behave as it should.

The problem I am having is my surface pro 4 doesn't auto switch to desktop mode when I turn it on with the keyboard attached if I was using it in tablet mode last. The choices in tablet mode settings is just plan confusing and dumb. They seem to conflict each other. I want my SP4 to auto detect if I have a keyboard attached or not and switch to desktop or tablet mode. It does this fine during an active session. But when I shut it down it will always boot into whatever state I was using last.

I know what your thinking, 'you must have it set to behave this way'. Yes I do. I have it set to remember how I was using it last. But this is because there is no other appropriate setting and this is the closest option. The choices are 'go to desktop', 'go to tablet mode' or 'remember what I did last'.

Isn't the point of continuum was to be able to detect how I am using a device and switch to the best mode automatically if I so choose?

I want my sp4 to auto switch based on how I'm using it. Why would I want it to behave any different when I sign in? And why isn't there an option that doesn't conflict with the 'make my device more touch friendly in tablet mode' and 'auto switch' options?

The options should be:

-Auto switch to desktop or tablet mode if a keyboard is connected or detached

-Always use tablet mode or -Always use desktop

-I will manually choose desktop or tablet mode

This would eliminate confusion. The way things are now, you have to manually choose how you want to use it when you log back in before shutting it down, through notifications tray or, if you have it set to auto switch, detach or reattach keyboard. Continuum was supposed to fix all of this right?

Anyone else notice this? Any solutions other than the obvious work arounds?

This happens with convertables as well, like my Yoga 2. MS forgot to add the option unfortunately, and to fix it now would move in the direction of making W10 feel more complete and polished. That is, of course, against the WaaS policy of keeping everything beta and exciting, so we see no solutions. Heck, they haven't fixed the stuff that was working fine in W8 yet so I can't see the new stuff getting a fix for some time to come.

MS did put a keypress for activating tablet mode in some original builds. This was removed in case we were tempted to make our own automated solutions. I think that says it all.
