I have just brought the Surface Pro 4 (i7, 8GB) and love the thing :)

My question is that I am in the insider program already with my Lumia 950XL and know if I want to go back to base/release build I use the Recovery Tool to do so.

If I do the same with the Surface is it a matter of getting the ISO from Microsoft or (not knowing Windows 10 that well) can I create a recovery disk with the base version on first before updating to insider builds?

    Hope that makes sense :)

Congrats on your purchase of SP4. It's really a great device!
You can download the recovery image from https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-in/support/warranty-service-and-recovery/downloadablerecoveryimage
which you can use to reset the device to factory state.
Retail ISO's created by media creation tool or downloaded from Techbench have problems booting up due to the UEFI firmware on the Surface.
