I am getting a brand new surface pro 4 (i7) this evening.
A couple questions: What tests/checks should I perform to ensure there is nothing wrong with the hardware? Are there common issues with the screen or backlight or anything else that I should double check?
Also, what sequence should I go through on the software side to make startup and updating as easy as possible? Is a fresh install recommended?

Turn on then create recovery disk #1 (8GB USB3) Store in safe place
Update fully (in settings and in store) then create recovery disk #2
Bitlock and backup key to both recovery disks
Set Up file History on NAS preferably or External is that's all you have
Check all functions like camera , and apps
Small light bleed at bottom is normal , look for dead pixels
Turn on system restore
Check your battery plans
Turn off remote assistance allowed
Turn Cortana into an ICON
Enjoy ..no need to mess around much more than that

No fresh install.
