I've come to really enjoy voice typing on my phone.
I'm really surprised to not see it on my Surface.
I was sure that, at least, the Bing app would support it.
My Android tablet has voice everywhere.

How about checking out the actual features before posting something patently untrue? It has full voice support and the settings to enable are found in same place as in Windows 7 and 8. A little basic homework can go a long way....

It's there but the OP is 100% right on a failure on MS's part to give it front-seat integration. With the launch of Windows 8, I consider any setting that kicks you into the desktop to either be:

    1) a high-level IT-setting

    OR

    2) a failure on MS's part to integrate it in a modern fashion.

This is not high-level IT. The onscreen keyboard should include a microphone button (perhaps on the press and hold to change keyboard types), at the very least.

The Bing app should have a mic button in the search bar, at the very least.

The charms bar should have had a voice input button/charm, at the very least.

Telling the OP, in a rude manner at that, that he can turn on voice recognition to type is not the same as having the TellMe service in your tablet. If I say "Nearby Chinese Food" Win8 types "Nearby Chinese Food" in a textbox whereas TellMe says where I can get me some General Tso's.

Pretty disappointing that they did a better job with the Bing app on the iPad then on their own Surface.

    Thanks for the pointer.
I've been using Windows since 3.11 (and Windows 8 on my laptop since the developer release) and I've never used the built-in voice functionality.
    Hehehe...
Of course, I've never had a reason to.
It wasn't until my phone that had any reason to (I'm a pretty quick typer - or is that typist).
As soon as I got the Surface, though, I assumed similar functionality (like the mic icon next to the Bing search bar).

I have found that leaving voice recognition running is a little taxing on my Surface RT.
I've resorted to leaving it in sleep with "start listening" to turn it on.

I'm really enjoying the voice feature.
    Thank you for noting that.

I've been playing around with it for about a month to see if I can use it to create draft papers.

I've known about it for years, just did not have a use for it. Its not for the faint at heart, but once trained it is cool. You can use it for so many features like navigation and input. I really hope it can help people with disabilities and such.

I have the option to start with windows enabled, but it doesn't seem to work (I keep having to re-open after a restart).
I haven't found a way to create a shortcut to it, so I can put it in startup.
