Twice this past week I was contacted about my experience with the Surface. Family and colleagues have seen me using the device daily for a year now, most recently the Surface 2. In both cases these folks were in the market for a tablet and wanted to go with the Surface. One of these was a family member who had grown disenchanted with his iPad and wanted something more productive! In both cases I pitched the $549 Surface 2 as hard as I could. I stressed the new CPU, the better screen, the two-stage kickstand, and fantastic SkyDrive offer. I could tell that price was a consideration for both of these folks and the $349 price of the original Surface was very attractive to both of them. I certainly didn't diss the original Surface. I couldn't. I still own one. I told them both if price was an issue, go with the $449 Surface 2 because with the SD card slot and SkyDrive, it didn't really matter how much storage the tablet had. They could get the 32GB tablet and a cheap sleeve case and use whatever Bluetooth or even USB keyboard they might have around and then buy a Type or Touch Cover later. In the end though that $349 price was too attractive. I told them both that with Windows 8.1 RT on the original Surface, it is a much better device than it was when it was released and to get a tablet with a good screen and Office for that price was a good deal. They both bought the Surface. One sprang for a Type Cover, the other went with a sleeve case. I am anxious to watch their use of the Surface. Oh, and the iPad is for sale.

So, did they choose the original Surface RT or the Surface 2?

It was the RT in both cases. I keep calling it the original Surface because they don't use the RT designation anymore.

Should have made them keep that iPad. Now your family and friends will hate you. Lol joking. I hope they love it.

I've sold a couple my self and it was also iPad users. I don't know if they just wanted a change or the features and productivity of the surface sold them. I think now it looks like there are a bunch of tablets that actually have some productivity to them with or without an app.

Good Job! I've been able to get 4 people to buy Surface RT at work. Real Office was the big selling point.

I bought an Asus Vivotab RT in October. I am a network engineer and I have grown disenfranchised with Android tablets. I have owned several over the years but they are just not very productive. I wanted something portable like a tablet to be able to browse the web away from home and at work. I have been very pleased with the Vivotab RT after I worked out the bugs after the 8.1 update. My wife has seen me use the RT device and has borrowed it to play with on several occasions. She put in to get one and when Best Buy had the original Surface RT for $199 I got her one. She has been using it now for a few days and loves it.
