Re: ATTENTION !!!! 920 & 1020 users

Click-bait title. Shame on you, urskruz.
they way you keep title keeps post in position. I don't see anything shame over it. Moreover, it's for them exclusively so that they stop by and answer about the devices they use which helps me in the end and also gives a good idea on how well the user comes forward to post about their experience on Lumia 920 or 1020. But, in middle another OP, Ian said there's a 925.

Re: ATTENTION !!!! 920 & 1020 users

because carriers have so much control over updates released to devices, the developer preview is a sort of wink-wink, nudge-nudge early access program for enthusiasts who don't want to wait months for their carrier to push the update if ever. technically its for developers, but the bar to become one is pretty low so anyone can do it.

For the most part, the primary difference between the 1020 and 920 is camera chops.
There are some smaller ones though.
Okay, I get it. Every where carrier plays main role in pushing updates, as they need to train their executives to assist customers in the end.

Re: ATTENTION !!!! 920 & 1020 users

The 920 has wireless charging built-in but it is alone. Both the 1020 & 925 require a cover for this. I found the cover helped significantly to make the 1020 easier to hold but felt the cover's plastic edge at the bottom made a slightly sharp edge where I wrap my finger at the bottom to support the phone. I've not noticed it feeling as bad on the 925, and I don't bother with a cover on my 920 since it can already wirelessly charge.

Re: ATTENTION !!!! 920 & 1020 users

If you want to save money, go with the 920. Should be able to find one cheaper.

If you want a Xenon flash and (when taking huge pics) a slightly slower experience, hit up the 1020.

You should buy two accessories - both the wireless charge cover and the camera cover. Both are valuable and I'd not be happy with the 1020 without them.

FWIW: I have a 920, my bro has a 1020.

perfect! I prefer wireless charging. looks like 920 is fitting my budget along with wireless charger.

Re: ATTENTION !!!! 920 & 1020 users

You could also get the "latest and greatest" available if you're in north america:

Nokia Lumia Icon vs Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Nokia Lumia 920 - Phone specs comparison

Lumia Icon has a quadcore processor - think of it as the 1520 but smaller. I'd personally rather have the 1520. I'm waiting for the next-gen 1520 equivalent or the 1020 next-gen. (1530,1030?) Nothing has been announced.

Nokia Icon is carrier specific, right OP? I don't live in North America

To the OP, you can't do wrong with either phone. I have a 920 (925 and 810 as well), never got a 1020, but both are awesome phones!

Re: ATTENTION !!!! 920 & 1020 users

I faced a similar choice - I went with the 920 because I didn't like the way the lens sticks out on the 1020 and because it has built-in wireless charging with no need for any crappy clip-on adaptor cases.

Re: ATTENTION !!!! 920 & 1020 users

I've had my 920 essentially from launch and it hasn't let me down once, the other thing to bear in mind is the 920 weighs approx 185g. Which for some people is too "heavy", I have had little nephews and nieces play with my phone without any problem.

Windows phone has a dedicate section for kids, which is called Kids Corner - this mode when enabled in the settings is accessed sliding to the left on the lock screen. Once in Kids Corner they only have access to the apps that you allow in the settings.

However they do have access to the camera roll and camera via the customize tile and at present doesn't allow you to have a separate password simple because you need to unlock your phone before giving it the kids. Furthermore make sure you set the lockscreen to require a password everytime the phone is put into standby / lock screen is activated it, as I found setting the password to come up after 30 seconds + to be a tad fiddly.

Re: ATTENTION !!!! 920 & 1020 users

This thread really isn't what I thought ATTENTION !!!! would mean. Chill, ask nicely, don't make people think their phones can explode in their pockets.
To answer your question: 920 and 1020 are hardware and software wise exactly the same except for the camera (8MP vs 41MP+xenon flash), display (IPS LCD on 920, AMOLED on 1020) and exterior. 920 is heavier with glossy finish, 1020 has matte finish (which I prefer, less fingerprints and nicer feel in hand), and also 920 has wireless charging built in (charger sold separately) while 1020 and 925 require a separate cover (and charger of course)
They're running exact same software, typing prediction is great on supported languages, new swipe keyboard that comes with 8.1 (which both will get and can get already) is awesome, you can also look at 925 which is again exactly the same as 920 except for screen (AMOLED on 925) and slightly improved camera, but still at 8MP. It's also thinner then 920 and has aluminum frame. 1020 makes awesome photos resolution wise but I like the color of 925 a bit more, then again I've only played with 1020 for 10 minutes and I've had 925 since October. If you can get it, 928 looks great too, again the same as 920 except it has xenon flash, which is about 1000x better then LED 'flash'.
If you want to get the best of the best, wait a little longer (and save up some more) and get the 930, which is worldwide version of Icon with 8.1 out of the box. It's far superior to 92x or 1020 performance wise, and its on par with 1020 camera wise.

Re: ATTENTION !!!! 920 & 1020 users

Hi Urskruz,

I am a Lumia 920 owner and not to complictae things, but I think your choice is three way as you should add the 925 to your list and which is best all depends on what sort of user you are.

The 920 is a big device, but I don't find it a problem because the design is very smooth. Apart from the buttons and metal strip up the back there is nothing to trip the fingers and it is very well balanced. You get OIS, 32GB and she comes in RED! She still turns heads and has done nothing araprt from improve since the day I got her.

If the 920 is too big, there is the 925. You loose the colours (white, grey and black only), Wireless charging (unless you buy a cover) and will have to watch whether you get the 16GB or 32GB versions. You gain slimline looks with the aluminium surround, a marginally better camera which has six lens elements instead of five and a camera bulge which is small but not to my taste. getting a 925 from scratch makes sense, upgrading from a 920 doesn't.

The 1020 is really only an option if you want to use that monster camera, because that bulge is BIG. Having said that, I'd have one in a heartbeat if I could afford it. It is a niche device which won't do most things any better than a 920 or 925. It just depends on whether you can justify the extra cost.

All three devices are good, will take great pictures in low light and will serve you well.

Good luck.

the bulge is hardly noticeable ;-) I think nokia done a good job ;-) its there but you don't notice it unless you type with your phone flat on a desk ;-)

Re: ATTENTION !!!! 920 & 1020 users

Okay, my son has had a L920 and my daughter has had the L1020 for months, so:

-Battery: Both have 2000 mAh batteries. But, LCD screens tend to use more juice. So, to answer a point you brought up, the L1020 and it's AMOLED screen MAY have generally better life. I have noticed zero real world differences. My daughters L1020 gets more of a workout as she is on it all the time. It holds up fine. My son can go the better part of a day and and half, but he uses his so much less it may not be fair. Overall, I would say the L1020 is better.

-Performance: That extra RAM will make a difference. Advantage: L1020.

-Price: Not even close. You will get a L920 MUCH cheaper. Like- a couple hundred cheaper if you are patient.

-Camera: Well, duh. It is the L920. (JUST KIDDING!!! Seeing if you are paying attention...)

This simple:

On the L1020, you MAY have slightly better battery life and the extra RAM will make background tasks run a little smoother. The camera is a world beater, best on any smartphone,

Wireless charging is handy if you are interested, and it is on the L920. The LCD screen may be your preference. Plus, price may be as much as half off of the L1020 if you shop around.

Otherwise, you are getting the close to the same phone.

First of all thanks for the complete and valuable info. I will note down the details.

Regarding "ATTENTION", it's something perfect one. Where every user will stop by and post the details of their device. As there are many models in Lumia, it's kind of confusing to me :)
Ultimately, MOBILENATIONS helps all :)

Re: ATTENTION !!!! 920 & 1020 users

Comparison
  • 1020 has best camera in industry vs 920 has a decent camera
  • 1020 has 2gb ram vs 920 has 1gb ram
  • 1020 is lighter vs 920 is heavier
  • 1020 has Xenon Flash vs 920 has LED one
  • 1020 has AMOLED display vs 920 has IPS
  • 1020 has matte finish even for yellow color vs 920 has gloss one for yellow [idk if this bothers you or not]
  • 1020 has camera grip accessory which is handy to use it as 1) camera 2) gives extra battery backup vs 920 doesn't have it , officially
  • 1020 doesn't have inbulit wireless charging , need to put on a cover vs 920 has it inbuilt
  • 1020 will allow you to have RAW files of the images, and other camera features coz of it vs 920 can not
  • 1020 will get more updates/fixes via firmware upgrades vs 920 won't get much now
  • 1020 has better image stabilization vs 920 has obsolete one
  • 1020 has Gorilla Glass 3 vs GG2 in 920 (not sure about this one though

Alternatives to 920 :
925 is lighter , doesn't have inbuilt wireless charging , has a bit better camera [has additional lens to help] and AMOLED screen vs to IPS in 920

Alternatives to 1020 :
930/Icon/1520 have best of 1020 (*they have 20MP camera , not 41MP) with better processor and ram but would be expensive / unavailable.

If you are Indian , then you can get an offer on buying 1020 or 1520, worth ₹3.7k : Nokia Lumia 1020 - Smartphone with 41MP Camera - Nokia - India | Nokia Lumia 1520 - New 3G Smartphone with 20 MP Camera - Nokia - India

Round up :
If you aren't crazy about IPS display or inbuilt wireless charging and can shell a bit more , go for 925
If you really want best camera out here , go for 1020
If you want a phablet and a great camera , go for 1520
If you just want a cheap WP phone with decent camera and inbuilt wireless charging , go for 920
