What looks bad about those photos to you? It looks like a nasty gray day, but I don't see a fault with the photos. Detail and color looks fine, considering what appears available. There wasn't much color in the subjects to pop, and a grey day doesn't help there.

As Parole said, it looks like there wasn't much color to capture on such a grey day. You may prefer a bit more pop to your colors, even in a picture like this. If so, you can take the pictures into a program such as PhotoShop or GIMP and increase the contrast, color saturation, and even shapen the focus some with an unsharp mask. Play around with them in post processing until you get what you want. The raw photos are probably showing what was there fairly accurately.

There is also a lot of backlight in the sky. For that reason, the camera underexposed the buildings in the foreground. You can use a program such as HDR Camera to get a more balanced exposure. Take a look at some of the photos in this HDR thread to see what I mean

Hope that gives you some ideas

You might want to try different subjects and compositions. For example, that picture could be improved by putting the London Eye a bit to the left. Learn the rule of 3rds. Learn to put something interesting in foreground in landscape photos like that. Also try converting to B&W when you have a dull colored picture like that. Sometimes no color is better than distracting colors here and there. You would be amazed how photos sometimes pop at you once you remove colors. And there are multiple ways for B&W conversion. Try different methods to get the best effect you need for a particular photo.

I over did this a bit to make the point, but here is a section of your shot where I cranked up the brightness in GIMP and then upped the contrast to bring out the foreground of the buildings. Of course, this over-exposed the sky. An HDR program will take three or more pictures - one overexposed, one under exposed, and one normal. It then combines them to try and get good exposure over the entire picture. It would fix both the sky and the foreground building exposures. Not being a photographer, I never even heard of HDR until I got my 521 and joined this forum. Now anytime I see a strongly backlit subject such as your subject, I automatically think HDR and fire up HDR.

This is what I got after cropping and conversion to BW. I also increased clarity in the cloud area to make it look a bit more dramatic. I used Lightroom 5.

BTW, I am amazed at the details I am seeing with your shot. I only have a 920 and there's no comparison here. It's pretty amazing what the 1020 can do.

To keep things as close to the term "Pictures taken with your 1020," as possible, I edit all of my photos using Nokia's Creative Studio. I could use Photoshop/Lightroom etc., but I want to keep things OEM :)

Same. I do use Imagenomic noise reduction in photoshop. Simply awesome.
Only other thing is altering color balance and using selective color to reduce yellowing, along with unsharp mask of eyes to make portraits pop.

I'm actually starting a mobile photography unit with my Grade 9 class. They were impressed by the 1020 and want to learn how to do mobile photography. Should be fun.

For basics, nokia creative studio is fine. But im assuming its not playing with the full res images? another thing thats really lacking is contrast! hopefully when RAW comes, an update for it will too.
