I'm heading to the UK soon for an extended period. In the past I've taken my trusty unlocked Nokia 6310 and plopped in a SIM for O2 and been good to go while I am there. (I just send an e-mail to family at home with the new number if they need to call me.) This time I'd like to take the 1020 for both photos and phone. It isn't unlocked, so will my plan work or do I need to sign up for AT&T's international roaming (shudder)? Any advice is welcome.

If you still got your Nokia 6310 just take that with you and slip in an UK sim card.

I don't know about AT&T international roaming but it sound expensive so it might just be cheaper to buy a cheap unlock phone which is very slim and light such as the 520.

I took my HTC Trophy from the US to the UK last year. Local SIM is definitely the way to go. The Trophy was international, but I had to call Verizon in advance to get an unlock code from them after meeting certain billing criteria.

I would call ATT, make sure you're talking to someone who understand unlocking (the first person I talked to at Verizon said it would just work - which is completely wrong), and see if they'll unlock it for you. If I remember correctly, they're required to do it for you if the phone is advertised as "international" or something like that.

I just got my 1020 unlocked ahead of a trip to France in November. I did it via email (best way), and it was VERY fast and easy to get it unlocked. I was anticipating a fight or long delay (which is why I asked so far in advance of my trip), but I now have an unlocked 1020. (I'm planning to get a local SIM card once I'm on the ground in France.)

unlocking lumia 1020 is very easy now. I just bought a code on ebay for $3. no need to beg ATT customer rep. for unlocked code.
