While I'm fairly confident thus phone could replace a basic point and shoot, what about a "superzoom?"

My wife and I currently use our 920s as our "go-to" cameras, mainly because we always have them, but also because the quality is fine for digital sharing and basic prints like photo books. We also have a Nikon Coolpix P100 that we picked up 2.5 years ago, before our son was born.

The Coolpix has a smaller sensor than the 1020 (1/2.3 vs 1/1.5) and fewer megapixels (10 vs 41), but has a much more advanced lens - like all "superzoom" cameras, it's a compromise between the simplicity of a P&S and the versatility of a DSLR. Would the 1020 be a viable replacement? I know that in theory, the 1020 should capture a better image, but just how much of a difference in sensor size is there? Also, could the portability, convenience and lossless zoom (digital) really make up for the loss of the Nikons flexibility?

How much do you need to zoom?
I am not familiar with the coolpix device, but I know in the past when I used the zoom on a P&S to zoom in far, the pictures usually turned out horrid. But that was on a P&S I had a long time ago, so maybe they have fixed that. So far I have used zoom on this camera in 2 different ways. One by pinching on the screen to zoom in, and the second by zooming in after the photo has been taken. The abilty to zoom in and maintain clairity on an image after taking it is rather impressive. See this thread here.

The actual zoom on the camera is not too strong. As seen here with phone in lap looking down to feet and then zoooming as much as you can with the pinch screen to zoom option. The 3rd 4th and 5th pics use re framing to zoom in. Sorry for the poor lighting, my office only has 3 crappy bulbs in a ceiling fan.
