Hey guys, I want to get your suggestions.

Today, I went to my local store to shop around for a new phone and saw a lumia 1020 on display for a very reasonable price (around 350 ). Without hesitation I pulled the trigger and brought it. When I boot it up for the first time "Not for resale" logo came up. It has all sorts of diagnostic apps installed. It's an unlocked Europe version of the white lumia 1020 with the following details.

I went back to the store but they are not willing to give me an refund. I'm not sure what to do now, should I contact Nokia and explain my situation?

    Regards,
    Ryan

That is strictly wrong and against Nokia policy. What you seem to have been sold is a demonstration model and retailers are given strict instructions not to sell demo units to the public. The retailer should refund you your money back immediately. Did this happen in the UK? If it did, then you can threaten them with Trading Standards who would be very interested in this kind of underhand behaviour.

Looking at the screen shot you posted, it looks like an early pre-release model as it is named the Nokia 909, which finally changed to the 1020. Also, I would definitely report this to Nokia as well and they should be more than willing to help you out in this matter.

Pop an email to Stephen Elop. You would get a new 1020 in less than a week

I'm sure Nokia wouldn't want to see you out of pocket and would make sure that you were fully reimbursed for the loss of your phone. Or, they may arrange to have it flashed with a fully working and proper OS rather than the demo version that it seems to be loaded with.

You can't return it? Amazing that they actually sold you a demo unit. 909 is normal. Don't know about future updates.

Just a reminder to anybody else, Lumia 1020 pre-order prices start from 550 at the moment and there is no international version for sale yet. Don't go for those deals that look too good.

I would definitely contact Nokia. Mine doesn't have any diagnostic apps, you got sold a phone they shouldn't have sold you. Is it even available in Europe yet? If they won't give you a refund, contact Nokia and they should take care of you.

Its best to contact Nokia, tell them where you got it and all the details and I am pretty sure they would get you sorted out with a normal 1020 and not a version the shop was not suppose to sell.

Yeah, I have also got a genuine 1020 now and it's also identified as the 909. I'm fairly sure that all 1020's are identified as 909, so that isn't anything to worry about.
I'm wondering how the OP got on with his original problem?

I have the same retail version. but APAC installed. i just updated to 3050.000.1338.1001 and i'm having problems with the shutter key. Only touchscreen focus is usable. I've contacted Nokia and asked about the problem and they just said to return where i have bought it.

Do our phones have the same product code? 059P6J6?

My APAC carrier version was updated to 3050.0000.1338.1004. I've got the ROM from NCS for APAC CV version (without carrier) at 3050.0000.1338.1010.

They all say that, presumably Nokia originally planned to call it the 909.

Yes, all the 1020's are named as the 909 in the settings. However, whatever you do please do not let the shop sell you the one that also says @demo. These are just the demo units and do not have the full firmware installed. They will also perform a factory reset automatically every so often.

This is not a problem, read this! But if this device you bought is not for sale...they HAVE to give you a commercial one!!
