I think there may be no fix for this... hoping not the case..

but i've found in my car.. if i have the bluetooth connected, but no headphone jack plugged in.. i get audio from visual voicemail via the cars sound system via bluetooth (shows connected on the dash etc)..

Plug in the 1/8" jack (for music playback in the car).. then repeat same thing.. i still see connected on the cars dash, but no audio plays.. pull out headphone 1/8" jack.. audio comes via bluetooth in car..

I poked around for any setting that might fix this.. no joy..

    Anyone else ran into this?

VVM plays through the same speaker that the music plays through...what is your 1/8" jack connected to when you plug it into the phone? That is where your sound is going.

Why don't you use the Bluetooth for music playback?

I never knew that was called anything other than a 3.5mm jack, haha. I hate that about the US

So....are you looking to get simultaneous output via 1/8 jack (music) and Bluetooth (phone/SMS/controls)?
That may not be possible, so how about just turning off Bluetooth?
Also, I'm surprised to hear you need to use the headphone jack for music. I don't have BT in my car but I assumed that an integrated BT system would pick up music and not just phone/SMS.

Do you know if the 1020 has the American Headset Jack (AHJ) 3.5 mm connector or the standard Nokia OMTP (Open Mobile Terminal Platform) 3.5mm connector, and depending on which one it has, the audio AUX or headphones might not work with it correctly & would be a problem with playing music thru it. You could have a connection which is what you say it says, but no sound. You need to find out what connector the 1020 has and what type of jack is on aux cord/headphone, they need to be compatible, that I know, and I don't just mean will they fit together securely, it depends on if the mic part of the jack lines up with the mic receiver connection on the phone. Those 2 or 3 tip rings on the headphone jack need to line up with it's opposite on the phone, if headphone or aux cable is AJH and phone is OMTP then the music sound might not be heard. The two different types of connectors listed above are configure differently and if they don't match up with the jack then you won't hear it playing music. Phone connector (audio) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This might not be the issue though.
Nokia Lumias seem to have the AJH headphone jack while older Nokias OMPT

I'd be very surprised if it is a jack mismatch. That issue is more likely to impact the microphone or input controls rather than the output (which is why you can usually listen to music through almost any headphones, but you can't use Apple ear buds to conduct a phone call on a Lumia). I'd try turning off BT first.

Yes and no I have a Nokia headset made for my Nokia 6301 and it is OMTP and my Lumia input is AJH and I can't hear a thing because the rings don't line up. Don't know if that's the case here but if the tip rings don't line up with the receiving input rings it will ground it and you won't get sound. Sometimes it just one channel but it can be both.

I have no problem getting music through the headphone jack.. the cable goes from the phone to the stereo in the car (car has an audio jack).. the bluetooth on my 2010 chevy equinox does not support stereo over bluetooth for playback of music..

It seems to be an either or situation.. plug the audio into the car.. loose the voicemail playback over the "bluetooth audio" in the car stereo, BUT, if you make a call you can press bluetooth (have to press the bluetooth icon if the audio jack is plugged in it seems), the audio from the call plays via bluetooth.. so its strictly a VM issue of playing the sound through the stereo via bluetooth while the audio jack is also in use.. calls work as expected.

On my older iphone 4, this was never an issue.

I have been experimenting with the bluetooth pairing for my Nokia Lumia 710 and my car equipment (Ford SYNC). It is clear that there are TWO different functionalities happening. One is the phone related functionality, which should include all calls including to voicemail, and the other is the music playback functionality, which I have been trying to use for driving directions from Nokia Drive. My experience is that the combination of Phone/Car-Kit cannot sustain both at once. So I connected the phone with the 3.5mm jack to the socket for the car. I then had to manually instruct the car stereo to disconnect bluetooth audio playback, while staying connected for phone.

I was able to get the audio from the sat-nav, while the bluetooth phone function stayed connected.

I think each combination off phone and car-kit behaves slightly differently.
