I've had my 920 since day one and love it. But I can't help wanting the better camera on the 1020. I can upgrade now but I keep questioning what is going to replace the 1020 and when will it be released. Has anyone heard any rumors about the 1020's successor?

If you want the 41MP camera I don't think there will be any successor out in a while.

I don't think there will be 1020 successor in next 6 months, 1020 was released just half year ago.
There will be more compact version of 1520 with 20mpx sensor and led flash soon. It should have same specs except that huge 6" display.

You could wait until April 2014 and the rollout of WP8.1 to see if any rumours pop up by then, but since MS will be taking over Lumia in the coming year it is hard to say what direction they will decide to take.
If you really want a 41mp phone in the near future and don't want to wait then the 1020 is you best option.

The 1020 is a 920 with an extra gigabyte of ram and a better camera. You should wait. I am too. :)

I almost got one tonight at Best Buy but they were terrible when it came down to doing business. Their mobile department that is. Was told they could price match, went to store and went to upgrade and they said can do early upgrades only for iPhone. So they went to price match phone for out right price and came back and said they actually couldn't after being told they could on phone. Ugh... my screen has been cracked (920) since April so its really hard to wait any longer.

Was rumors online about 1820 being a successor to 1020 with new lytro style camera and wp 8.1 for Spring (April?), who knows.

I would wait for MWC and Build to pass before making a decision.. or at least MWC which is in February.

I am expecting the same camera combo powered by a more suitable chipset like the snap 800 or 805, and a 1080p display.. maybe even 4k video recording if they do it right.

An upgraded camera package might come later in the year..

I would wait. I have both 920 and 1020. Have to say that i prefer the 920 camera when at a nightclub or party as i don't have time to mess around with wb etc a d as a point and shoot the 920 is better than the 1020. I hope the black update fixes the very poor 1020 yellow tint which quite frankly means i don't use it much

Wait for Nokia Goldfinger official announcement. If for some reason it wont have 41 mpix camera and you realy realy want this camera, you can purchase 1020 (and pay less money than now).

It is completely fixed with Black. Xenon flash screams in night clubs. Excellent pictures with no tint.

I would also suggest to wait till MWC, if you are looking for a contract phone.

I don't really see a reason for it not to have the same camera unless they want to go thinner..

I had the same scenario. I decided to just buy a 1020 and wait for the announcements in a few months. I'll sell the 1020 and use that to get whatver new WP comes out. I've seen used 1020's in good condition go for as low as $350 on swappa.

This is what this camera package needs..

Snapdragon 805's desktop-class mobile graphics chops in action (video)

So I would wait until they release it :)

The 1020 is just a bit underpowered at the moment, and I feel like they are not extracting the full potential out of the sensor using that old SoC

It's big, it's expensive, so I'm wondering if they will be able to put 41mpix + "lytro"-style + "kinect", good screen, good SoC - all of it, in a reasonable body AND a reasonable price. Remember, that 1020 (and even 808) are both expensive as hell on their own, despite having extremely outdated pieces of hardware inside them. Good screen, good SoC and steel body may skyrocket the price beyond reasonable numbers (unless MS is going to subsidise it even more than usual).

^ I was thinking they can just reuse the camera module from the 1020 or the 808 without adding anything to it. At this point the R&D and the manufacturing of the module is scaled to the point where they are probably making money on every device, so they might be able do it without any losses. The initial R&D investment is where the real cost for it came from, and I am not sure if they made any money on the 808 to be honest.. the 1020 is a different story, they've probably sold way more 1020s then they did 808s.

If I remember correctly you can buy a replacement camera module for the 808 at around $50 .. so the manufacturing cost must be much lower if a third party vendor is selling it for that price.

Now if they start adding new stuff like you say.. that might come later in the year as the next camera flagship.

    I am talking about an upgraded 1020 .. call it 1020s ; )
