1020 vs 920 low light

So.. I noticed with my new 1020 that my 920 has better low light performance...

I tried some video recording in my dimly lit room and can't see anything on the 1020.... example...

This is what the 1020 sees...

It's a new phone. Couple days old. Factory reset it as I took it out the box. Updated to black.

Thoughts?

1020... Why is it so dark and noisy.. Look at the lines at the edge of the screen too....

it is because 920 has aperture f/ 2.0
where 1020 is f/2.2
if you buy 720 it will be the brightest in low light because it has f/ 1.9

the actual pictures are fine. But it's the video recording in more concerned about. I mean, look at the picture, I can't see anything !

you have vertical lines on video, and my lumia has horizontal lines on video, now the question is whether it is a software issue...
920 is have light video because it has f2.0, and 1020 f2.2..

I think its because i was holding the phone in portrait and you , in landscape

As Dexterrino mentioned, the 1020 has an f2.2 aperture whereas the 920 has an f2.0. This is to address the 'softness' of photos that users originally complained about - in a nutshell the lower the aperture the more light is let in but the softer the photo; the higher the aperture the less light is let in and the sharper the photo (generally). Furthermore I reckon the lines are there on the 1020 (I've noticed this too) because the phone simply hasn't been around as long - in the past two years there has been a lot of time for the engineers to refine the firmware for the camera on the 920 whereas the 1020 has only been out for a year.

In fact, not only 920. I was having a 925 before my current 1020. And I can see much brighter on the viewfinder with the 925, but is pitch dark for 1020. Not sure if it is due to the F2.0 of 925. But 925 indeed can result in much brighter images for dark places as compared to 1020.

If I am not mistaken the quality/framerate of the video affects the brightness too. 24 fps will be brighter than 30 fps

You are correct as the effective shutter speed is increased, marginally but it does help.

I was very disappointed with the 1020 after 3 months, sold it and went back to 920.

I also have a 1020 and also will admit the low light performance is worse than my old 920. Luckily it was a free warranty replacement, but I recommend that if low light photography is your goal of the pureview camera, stick to the 920. Don't waste your upgrade on the 1020. I personally can't wait for the WP8.1 devices. Hopefully there will be some awesome new camera tech coupled with a capable processor

I'm hoping that there will be a 1020 successor with f2.0. Surely with those 41 megapixels, Nokia can more easily correct for softness with software processing.

I love that low light performance of the 920 / 925.

Thanks for all the info everyone, was considering a 1020 and giving my wife the old 920, looks like she'll be getting a 1020 or Samsung Galaxy 4s now. Did not realize the 1020 could not equal the 920 in low light pictures and I need the ability to capture low light shots.
