I'm comparing a laggy 1020 vs a fast 930. You're less likely to miss the important shot with a Lumia 930, compared to a Lumia 1020.

You talk about readiness. You could be ready with a Lumia 1020 for the past 20 mins, but if it lags, then you miss the shot. So for smartphones, it isn't about readiness, but the lag.

The "lag" is after the shot is taken, in processing. There's no reason to miss a shot with the 1020 that you wouldn't with any other phone.

I own a 1520 and a 1020. People exaggerate about the 1020. If you know you need speed shots, with the 1020, you need to be ready with the proper settings like the action sequence.

you didnt mention launching or resuming the camera app can somewhat dissatisfying. And lets be honest, l too have the 1020 and its terribly slow not ideal for all around photography but its really really good at taking stationary objects. Image processing is also playing a huge role in photography, that's why most/all action photographers are choosing camera that has higher burst rate, faster processor and best/fastest data storage they could afford.

I've got the 1520, 1020 and 930. If I need to take a fast picture, I use my 930. Simple. I use my 1020 for scenic shots, but even then, I've usually got my DSLR to take them.

I have 2 1020s and have not seen the "lag" the non owners speak of. I get way more shots from my 1020 than I ever would from my other phones. I get 2-3 times more useable shots with the 1020. Plus doing everyday things with my phone works perfect.

If you have a 930/1520 then you would notice the lag. The 1020 does lag compared to those phones and I have missed important shots due to the lag.

I think people are missing the price a bit here. Let's say you are paying full price for 930 and half of that for 1020 . Then it's a question of finding a cheap 1020 somewhere and with that in mind buying later the 1030 if it ever comes out in 6 months maybe? or something. But if it was for a future phone I would always go for 930 in my opinion as I have the denim now I can say that the camera is a monster beast :) and yes specally in low light!!

That's what I'm going to do.. Get a 1020 now, and wait for its successor.

Also there's another advantage that the 1020 has over 930/1520: DXO OpticsPro supports it.
I've been playing the software for a few days now and damn, it is amazing. :D

If you've got a DSLR camera, then the 1020 is not that useful. Don't get me wrong, it's got a great camera, but nothing compared to a dedicated camera.
Sorry man, but I think you don't have neither DSLR nor Lumia 1020. Or, perhaps, you just don't use camera at all. I do have DSLR and Lumia 1020, and I can tell you have many times I had lack of DSLR with me. But, my Lumia 1020 was always in my pocket, and photos it takes are really superior quality and feel. Due to large camera sensor the photo from Lumia 1020 looks as good as photo from DSLR (of course, quality is different, but you can't compare 1020 to other smartphone, photos looks much more like DSLR and not smartphone). The size of 1020's sensor is really huge and it makes very big difference. Sensor is even bigger than in most mid class compact cameras (or even top compact cameras).

It really doesn't matter till you use Windows Phone. I almost didn't notice any difference in speed after swit

Who cares? Why is this so important?

Full advantage? What are you talking about? A 4k video? How does it relate to photography? You can only take full advantage with huge camera sensor and RAW format in Lumia 1020.

930. The 1020 has serious freezing issues on wp 8.1
There is NO ANY (even not serious) freezing on wp 8.1. Lumia 1020 works perfectly on this OS version (it worked perfectly on Windows 8, then on Windows 8.1). Why are you telling lie? Or maybe you just have a defective smartphone?

Yeah, I think its has the slowest camera from today's smartphones.
Yep, it has the slowest camera from today's smartphones with DSLR quality. Oh, wait a minute... there is no smartphone except Lumia 1020 with such camera quality! :) So, there is no cameraphone to compare with. ;)

I've got a DSLR and a Lumia 1020. Your point?

You can't compare a smartphone with a DSLR. The DSLR wins due to the image quality. If you're talking about portability, then the Lumia 1020 wins. But even then, the Lumia 930 beats the Lumia 1020 as it doesn't lag.

The Lumia 1020 lags after taking the picture. Don't make up rubbish and say the camera doesn't lag. I've got the Lumia 930, 1520, 920, 625 and 1020. Heck, even a 2yr old 920 is faster than the 1020.

The only problem with the 1020 is that it promises DSLR quality (it doesn't). It offers portability, but the 930 beats that. I'm looking forward to the 1030, with no lag

Sure, Lumia 1020 needs some time (~3 sec) to save the photo. But this phone doesn't lag in terms of software\OS (like Samsung flagship phones). And if someone tells that Lumia 1020 is lagging on Windows 8.1 it means 1020 works slowly with lags. And that's not true. Lumia 1020 works flawlessly. But yes, it takes few seconds to save photo (due to large 41 mpx sensor).

And I will not agree that the quality of the image can't be compared to DSLR cameras (of course, I don't take to account top Canon DSLR with prime lens like Canon 85 mm f/1.2). But the quality 1020's photos can NOT be compared to other's smartphone cameras. That's for sure!

Sure, if Lumia 1020 had 5Mpx sensor with small physical size, it would take a few milliseconds to take and save photo.

I myself in quite same situation as OP , I have lumia 1020 but there are times it lags ,and I miss some great shots , I have been checking up a lot on the lumia 930 and I also see it's taking full advantage of the Denim Camera features, nothing beats taking fast camera shots,i'd do anything for that on my 1020 but facts are facts ,and the 1020 is limited due to it's hardware in contrast to the 930,i am also wondering whether to hold out for the lumia 1020 successor, or just sell my 1020 and get the 930. I use my 1020 for everything, email, browsing, games, taking pics, setting appointments , you name it, it's faster than many other android phones but I know it can be better if I processor like the 930. and you get wireless charging also.

I had a 1020 which went broke.. Got refunded and got a 930
I like basically everything about it especially after denim, but when it comes to still quality its decent but noticably worse.

Would probably still go for the 930 if put in the same position, but mostly because i got a dslr too..
It all comes down to how much you value the camera over speed and uptodate-ness. Screen is much nicer too.
