I have my 1020 unlocked with Att prepaid, but the service/signal is not the greatest, I want to try Verizon, I don't see any reason my 1020 shouldn't work on their network, but their website tells me it wont.. Thing they just user that to get you to buy their phone, but I'm not giving up my 1020...
Anyone tried to just put a Verizon SIM card in an unlocked one and see if it works out am I stuck on this one?

Not going to work. Only phones explicitly cleared by Verizon.

As far as Windows Phone is concerned, only VZW phones will work with VZW

Nope. There is a world outside of Windows Phone you know! Both Apple and Google have factory unlocked phones that worked on Verizon before they were "cleared" by Verizon. It doesn't have to be approved by Verizon; it has to have Verizon compatible radios.

You got the details correct here!

I know, hence the "as far as WP" is concerned. I know about the Nexus 6. I've been schooled on that already!

Like others on here have said, not going to work. The frequencies used and technology (CDMA vs. GSM) doesn't match up (except for some LTE (bands 2 and 4 although some questioning on band 4 really being the same), but I wouldn't rely on that). Here's some details to show you why:

    AT&T Frequencies:
    4G-LTEBands 2, 4, 5 and 17
    4GHSPA+ with enhanced backhaul
    3G - UMTS850/900/1900/2100MHz
    GSM/GPRS/EDGE850/900/1800/1900MHz

    Verizon:
    850 MHz 0 1xRTT/EV-DO/eHRPD 3G
    1900 MHz PCS 1 1xRTT/EV-DO/eHRPD 3G
    700 MHz Block C 13 LTE 4G
    1700/2100 MHz AWS 4 LTE 4G
    1900 MHz PCS 2 LTE 4G
