insert your sd card, and phone will ask whether you want to store your new media on sd card or not, then choose yes.

you can also change that in the settings under phone storage.

there's an option for that, although its disabled in devices without SD, like my 920. It's there regardless anyway.

Podcasts and music can also go in the sd card, which saves a lot of space. :)

Cool...I was wondering about Podcasts. I have a lot of them that take up a considerable amount of space on my 920. I feeling better all the time about be able to survive on 16Gig on board and 64Gig SD. Games are still going to be a small problem for me but I'll just have to be more selective on which ones I keep on my phone. I have tons of games, same of them over 1 and 2 gigs, but don't play them all of the time. At least now I can reserve my 920 for my grandson so that I don't have all of his games and apps on my new 1520!

That might be a stupid question, but I never used a micro SD card in a phone. Is there anything I need to be aware of? I am planning to add a 64GB card to the Lumia 1520. Can I just go ahead and order any card or are there specifications I need to be aware of or advantages/disadvantages on specific cards?

SD cards are also classified by Class, not just storage space. There's cards of Class 4, Class 2, up to the top-of-the-line Class 10 cards. A higher class just means the card can be faster, although generally a slower, cheaper card should be suitable for normal use.

So otherwise, pretty much, anything goes.

I would probably get class 10. Keep in mind any microSD card you buy is probably slower than the internal flash memory. Or I would highly suspect that to be the case.

i remember in the not-so-distant past, some android's often had very little internal storage, making very little space for apps. so people would do some wizardry and make it work, often by moving the apps to the SD card. Sometimes, class 10's improved performance as ironic as it may be. (from anecdotal comments ive seen) but it doesnt make a difference in terms of media use, can't really tell.

Maybe Class 10 is up to the speed of the NAND used inside phones. Originally, it was much slower.
