I have got a Lumia 1520 which I believed came with the latest version on wp8 black. When I searched for an update in the setting menu, it said that there was an update available! On my previous phone (920) I was part of the developer preview. I still have the developer preview app installed on my new device.
Basically I need help please. Do I update or not? Is the update a newer version of black or a version of gdr3?

Current version: 8.0.10517.150
Update version: 8.0.10521.155

Be careful with that update - it might cause an app opening problem ... well, if it does, just install a new keyboard and then restart - it should fix it (it did, for me) ....

It's a developer preview so there's always some risk associated with it. If you are a developer for Windows Phone update it, if not just leave it.

it's not a DP update. why wouldn't you google it, and why wouldn't you keep your device up-to-date?

You use google? Ha.
I wasn't sure weather to update as it is the same version number as my 920 and i thought that 1520 shipped with the most up to date version. Not sure if this is going backwards or an actual update. And as for the why wouldn't you keep your phone up to date comment, because the developer preview update voids the warranty.

How come do you think you loose your warranty by installing developer preview? Least here in Finland it's not that. And by the version numbers, the update version is newer one.

And how about those app developers? How do they keep their warrants while using developers previews?

They buy a developer device or are willing to possibly lose the warranty.

The app also says may, not will.

That being said the 1520 did receive an OS update post release to 10521 from 10517. I believe there was also a firmware update as part of the group of updates.
