Is this true? I was at the Raptors game last night ready to snap some great pics and videos when I noticed that I couldn't zoom in anywhere nearly as well when I'm taking pics than when I'm shooting video. If I switch to the old camera app I can zoom in just as much as with video. But the Nokia Camera app doesn't seem to do to the same.

Is this normal and if so is there a reason for it? Instead I got to watch people using their cheap Android phones zooming in to take closer pics.

For pictures, I believe they let you zoom in until the image is cropped to 1920x1080 (or around abouts). For video, since it is already being recorded at 1080p they don't want you to lose too much definition in the picture. As the post above says, you can always crop/zoom later. I don't see the disadvantage in taking a complete picture then zooming.

Well I suppose that's they want you to do. Just odd that you can clearly zoom in further when shooting video.

Switch the recording quality to 720p and you can zoom more, around 6x I think, compared to the 3x zoom on 1080p.

And 720p video, using Nokia Camera and without zooming, results in the phone having more pixels to use for oversampling. Videos at 720p have less noise, especially when shooting low light.
