I recently jumped back to the WP world (having an iPhone before) and I'm having an issue with my 1520. About 50% of the time when I wake the screen up and try to unlock it by swiping up it won't follow my finger all the way up and only goes halfway up and then returns to the bottom, keeping it locked. Sometimes the lock screen will then have a mind of its own and jumping up and down and then once it has unlocked itself it'll jump around the home screen or go to my app screen and chose a random app. Yah, kinda psycho. I'm not touching the screen when this is happening. It'll also do this when typing an email or text. It'll start typing randomly and then exit the screen that I was on.
What is going on?? Do you think it is a hardware issue or software issue? I've only had the phone a few days. The first day I got it I updated the OS... so maybe this is the culprit?
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I am having the same exact issue. From what I have found, this is most definitely a hardware issue. I first noticed it when I was using my camera button to take photos and the screen would start jumping around, launching Bing search, launching multitasking, and typing all without the screen being touched. I performed 5 factory resets to still find the same issue. Some experimenting has led me to believe that whenever I squeeze on the phone's chassis, thinks I am touching the screen and registers it on the digitzer. I used to be a phone repair technician during college and my hunch is most definitely right this is hardware related. I am going to AT&T this week to try and do a warranty exchange. This is by far one of the greatest smartphones I have owned, but it is now tainted by this annoying issue. I have spare iPhone 4s and it sucks I can't easily swap out my sim card until my phone is replaced... Ugh If you can, try and squeeze on you phone and see if you get the same results..

Thanks for the post. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue. I did try squeezing it here and there and everywhere to see if it would reproduce the problem, and it seems not to have anything to do with where I am holding/squeezing it. Since where I am holding it doesn't seem to matter, I placed it on a table and woke it up by double tapping some of the time and then with the power button the other times. It happens randomly, with no correlation to how I wake it up.

That's odd yours doesn't react to squeezing. It kind of makes sense because mine didn't react to squeezing either at first, but now it does.. Maybe just needs some wear and tear to progress? My phone is basically unusable when holding it in my hands, but I can somewhat use it flat on a table. Mine has never woken itself up, but I have felt it vibrate like its being touched when it's in my hand when it starts messing up. I am going to the AT&T store to try and get a a warranty claim setup. I can easily show a rep how this is a hardware issue with my model. There are other forums on WP Central with people having similar issues, but none have confirmed its a hardware issue either. They have performed hard resets and the problem still persists... Good luck

An update (in case you were curious)- Doing a full system reinstall did not fix the issue BUT I did find something that DID fix it! I turned off the "Double tap to wake up phone" in the touch settings and I haven't had a problem since. Not sure if it is indeed a hardware issue or a software issue. It's sad that I can't just double tap anymore to wake up the screen but at least I don't have to deal with everything being crazy and jumping around.

CJ- Did you end up returning your phone under warranty? Just wondering. And if you did and have a new 1520, are you experiencing the jumping screen anymore?

Read about it on Nokia Discussions. There's a video showing it happens when the phone is squeezed:

This isn't exactly what is happening to me. My lock screen will bounce up and down and once it unlocks (if it does) then it will randomly select things on the screen. It's like it feels touch input all over the screen and doesn't know what to do. It won't calm down unless push the power button to turn the screen off and then it's back to normal.
No back button issues really. I squeeze my phone like described in your link but nothing happens. Very odd though. That is a definite hardware issue!

My Lumia 1520 is about 6 months old and from the beginning, had the well-known issue where swiping around the bottom third of the screen wouldn't always register or it would misinterpret as a tap and open whatever my finger was on. It was rare though and didn't bother me much. About 1-2 weeks ago though, I started experiencing what you are reporting. It first happened on my Start Screen, where it would spaz up and down a quarter inch or so, super-fast, and usually locking the phone and unlocking it would resolve it, but it would sometimes be back within a few seconds. Sometimes, it'll even do it at the lock screen, sometimes "tapping" as well, so I'd end up locked out of my phone for a minute because of too many "guesses." It really got bad after I upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1 w/ Lumia Cyan, but I think it is just coincidence. I know there has been some tweaking regarding the "no swipe" or "random tapping" at the bottom-third of the screen, so it's _possible_ the Lumia Cyan update is responsible, but I highly doubt it. (Prior to about one week ago, I was running the Developer Preview w/ Windows Phone 8.1, no Lumia Cyan.)

The biggest problem for me is that I live in Canada where we do not get the Lumia 1520. I had to bring in the international unlocked version, which I love because of the built-in 32 Gb of storage and built-in wireless charging, but it also means that I cannot get warranty work on it here. I even looked into it in the US too and Nokia there also says that they cannot perform warranty work on it because it is not a US AT&T model. Frustrating. I am not in a position to afford to replace this phone after only 6 months. I might be going back to my Lumia 920 in the meantime, which has a broken vibrate motor but at least doesn't bounce all over the place.

I've fiddled with screen sensitivity and my double-tap to wake is currently disabled, so it's not that. I'm just stumped. I might try nuking it a couple times and see what I can find. Also, squeezing it doesn't really seem to fix it, nor tapping it on my arm or leg. It might be doing it more in landscape mode, as the worst was this morning, when I had to RDP into a work server to resolve something. Again, might just be coincidence.

Curious to see how many others have this issue and if anyone might have any other tricks up their sleeves!

I have this problem as well. I thought my digitizer was damaged.. I recently read an article about people putting 1520 in their pockets( I carry mine in my back pocket all the time). Apparently sometimes the body of the phone is bent just enough for the screens to go crazy. Once I again having the phone in my back, I've sat in chairs and even driven my truck..smh. Someone suggested bending the top and bottom of the phone down to restore the screen. I had nothing to lose. I tried it last week, so far no more crazy touches freezing my phone

Had the same problem but cyan fixed it. No more problems so I am personally putting it down to software rather then hardware. Also..i am O.C.D with my phone screen. I clean it with a microfibre cloth and screen cleaner (get that at the 99p/99cents shop. And no problem tapping. If I let the screen get greasy like eating a burger and using the phone while I have grease on my hand from the burger usually the taps don't work half the time. Always clean the screen guys makes all the difference and have a sexy looking phone too *smile*

I had read about this and around the time that I posted my response, I stopped carrying it in my pocket all of the time. I kept it in my front pocket, but bending to tie my shoes, for example, would really put pressure on it against my leg, almost to the point of discomfort. So I stopped, and fingers crossed, it's only done it once since then. I'm going to keep an eye on it. 1-2 times I've had the "doesn't recognize swipe at bottom third" or "sometimes interprets swipe at bottom third as a tap" issue, but even that is less often than it used to be. So maybe this ended up being the fix... time will tell.

I had installed Lumia Cyan prior and it still occurred, but I've heard that most Nokia firmwares *do* do something to tweak it, making the touchscreen response better each time. I keep my screen cleaned, though part of me wondered if I should pull the case and give it a good cleaning too. The rubber trim ring around my case (it's one of those tank-ish ones) is right up against the glass, which makes for a good fit, but I wonder if any dust or gunk gets in there that it might affect touchscreen performance. I'm just scared to see what the matte black is going to look like under there. I'm sure it's rubbed shiny. :( Oh well... back into the case it'll go anyway, so it'll be hidden.

anyone who have this might need to try the bending menthod that use to resolve the phantom tap issue, as I've found that all these touch screen intermittent issues seem related to static electricity... and the screen bending seem able to resolve it as it seem when u bend the phone abit (with care ok as later u may risk to crack the screen) there's some connector or ground strap within the phone (that grounding the LCD screen) got little work out and causing the screen to be return to normal proper working state... but do remember only minor few times bending will do the trick and DO NOT over do it as be careful when u bend the phone as we all don't want to crack your device LCD... ;)
