Though I never used either 1020 or 1520 before, but if you are a common user, I will recommend a Lumia 1520, if you don't mind its big screen.
Lumia 1520 has better specs because it focuses on multimedia and gaming entertainment, and for selfies, landscape photos, 20MP of rear cam is more than enough imo.
Lumia 1020 has great camera, yes, but with human's eyes you will hardly see differences between 20MP and 41MP, I think. But if you want real photography, get an 1020, of course. Hope this is helpful 😏

What are you going to use the 41MP for? Nobody will ever make comments on pics like "OMG, that's 41MP pic!" or "You should be a pro photographer, you have a 41MP camera!". People normally see the subject on pics and not the resolution. The 20MP camera on 1520 will be enough to give you great looking photos. Plus, you don't want to take a lot of 41MP photos on 1020 or you will use up your storage space all the time. 1020 doesn't have expandable storage.

What do you think about Nokia Lumia Icon/930? 5" screen other specs same to 1520, except CPU.

Well as I own an 1020, I can recommend it if taking pictures with amazing quality is important to you. And yes, there is differences between 20Mpix and 37/41Mpix. The differences becomes more apparent the bigger screen you use to view them. And then there is low light capability of 1020 which is regarded unmatched. And WP 8.1 is just as smooth and snappy with 1020 and 1520 or even 520! For gaming and media, I wouldn't recommend 1020 as the battery isn't made for them. If you want good phone with amazing smartphone camera, then get 1020. If "good enough" is sufficient for you in pictures, then choose 1520 :)

The supposed EOL of the 1020 shouldn't hurt updates since it would be stupid to stop for that device and not the other, older ones.

    Just my two cents.

The thing is, fewer and fewer people are using BIG SCREENS. Everybody is going "mobile". Unless you are using 41MP photos for prints, then by all means, get the 1020. Most people will just view your photos from their low res smartphones, so there's really no point taking a high res photo. :P

I just never found out just who would use this. There are photographers out there who would use there camera to take actual pictures. But which photographers want a windows phone? Its hard to tell. And I've also heard that the 1020 is a little laggy and choppy when it comes to anything other than taking pictures, which if I'm honest, is an important aspect of the phone, which is where the average consumer comes in. They don't want a slow phone...
Its odd where the 1020 fits in, but all in all, its just another wonderful windows phone!

The 1020 takes amazing pics and is only slow on being able to take another photo within 3sec. 8.1 runs super smooth on mine. The battery is the killer of this phone, imo.

Its hard to recommend the 1020 as 41 megapixels must take a fair size of ram and you have no SD support. And despite the 1520 which has Half the camera pixels bear in mind the 1080p screen makes up for the 720p on the 1020. In all honesty.... I have a 1520 and the pics are so amazing you could easily think it was taken on a 1020. The HD screen makes a difference. And bear in mind you can put all games and apps on SD card. The 1020 cant do that so with filming, pics, games and apps you really cant have too much on the 1020. The 1520 can take 128GB cards plus the internal 32GB inside. So........really its a choice of 1020 with limited ram and 720 screen...... Or a 1520 with 1080p screen, loads of ram, powerful hardware and big screen. If your going to play a game or watch tv or browse who could say no to a big screen. I am no way putting the 1020 down. Great phone. The size of the 1520 is not an issue. I have a magnetic case on it and it fits deep in my pockets with out poking out. That's wearing baggy combats as I am not a jeans person. Hope my comments help. And of course....do go and see both phones in person at a store too.

Honestly, I've had a 1020 since last September and I wish I would have waited on the 1520. The camera is awesome, but im sure the 1520 will be just fine for your needs. The only thing im in love with on the 1020 is the camera grip with option for tripod. I'll miss that when I finally upgrade. It really makes a difference taking awesome pics.

I have the AT&T 1020 and the 1520.3 so here are some things to consider.

The 1020 is unrivaled when it comes to photos. If you take a lot of photos, the 1020 blows the 1520 out of the water in any conditions. Don't let the dated processor scare you. Outside of slightly longer shot times the 1020 is still smooth as butter even with the older processor. The 1020's ability to zoom in without loosing quality will change the way you take photos. Now I just snap pictures non-stop and go back later and find the exact photo I want. I can't stress to you how awesome this really is for a camera phone. Low light and distance are things I laugh at with my 1020.

The 1520 takes good photos in great light, but it's night photos and night time video is closer to what you'd see on an iPhone. It does still give you 2X Lossless Zoom though so you'll still be able to zoom in and have great pictures and video when everyone else cant.Supposedly the CYAN update improves the picture and video quality of the 1520. It also supposedly improves the 1020, which means it's still no contest. It's a good camera but only slightly better than what you'd find in an iPhone of LG prior to the CYAN update. I can update my response after the update comes out.

Pictures aside, the 1520 is my daily driver and while it's size can be a bit much (you'll need two hands to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome, lol), its a glorious device to use. Viewing Pictures, Video and playing games on it are like having a mini tablet. I can't stress how great this is enough. It's a magical experience using device this size.

The battery life of the 1520 is 2 or 3 times that of the 1020. By that I mean that in a 12 hour period of heavy use (Social media, streaming music and using Bluetooth headphones, sending a couple hundred IMs, playing games for about 10 minutes and taking about 10 pictures), I still have 30% left before hitting the charger.

The LCD Screen on the 1520 is better than the AMOLED Screen on the 1020 in my opinion. The AMOLED display oversaturates all colors so sometimes you can't really tell how awesome or bad of a photo you've really taken when viewing them on the 1020. But once you pull it up on your computer you will be amazed. With the 1520, what you see is what you get, which is good if you take a bad shot. The LCD on the 1520 is also more viewable in bright sunlight with Nokia's display tech. the Touchscreen is better on the 1020 however. the 1520 spazzes out every blue moon.

The Qualcomm 800 Processor makes a noticeable difference in the 1520. The 1020's processor is good enough, but the 1520's processor blows it out of the water in every aspect. That's to be expected because of the age difference. Games, loading web pages, shot times, video ...etc, it's a noticeable difference if you have both devices side by side. If you only have one device, you won't feel like you're missing out choosing one or the other.

Pictures are my thing so even when my 1520 is re-gifted I'll still have my 1020. There's nothing else that comes close to it. The camera grip gives it the battery life of my 1520 and even my friends with iPhones, Galaxy devices and SLR cameras marvel at the photos. They have designated me as the picture taker with my yellow phone. Lol.

If you can only get one and iPhone quality pictures are good enough, get the 1520. For every scenario outside of Pics, it's the best Windows Phone Device available today. Warning, once you use it for a week, going back to a smaller phone is going to be very difficult. Your eyes get very comfortable seeing everything so clear and big. Instagram and Flickr are like watching Porn. Lol!! App developers are even making 1080P apps that make great use of the extra screen space. The New WPCentral app is one example.

    I hope this helps.
