Is it a downgrade to get the 1020 over the 1520?

I have a 1020 too. I rarely use mine. I prefer the speed and over all awesome form factor of the 1520. I also noticed how much slower the 1020 is for photo start up time and jpeg rendering after shooting.

Also remember that the 1520 with Denim will get much improved photo algorithms and 4k video with full frame exports. The 1020 will not get these features except for possibly the new algorithm

Re: 1520 for a 1020

I've had a 1020 since it was launched. I love it, overall, but I'm falling out of love with the screen and the sluggish performance.

I just ordered the 1520.3 from eBay, because I want something that is still heavily performing and supported.

Downgrade? Yes. Definitely is.

Def a downgrade...all it has going for it is the camera... But yet.... If you upload pics to facebook you will lose the 41 megapixel quality as it has to be compressed....so..... If you want a 1020 that you can't show off the pics via media and no glance, smaller screen, inferior quality screen and no SD slot.....then your as mad as the queen on a pogo stick singing "kum by ya"

Re: 1520 for a 1020

Id have to say its a downgrade too, while the 1020's camera is nice, it really isnt THAT big of a difference, the 1020's camera is nice, but its really not worth dropping the specs so low, at least not in my opinion. That said, the 1020 is likely about to go EOL (if it hasnt already.. havent been payng much attention to it) so its price will be dropping, could make for a great secondary phone.

Re: 1520 for a 1020

I own both. I use my 1020 as an alarm clock. The 1520 is quicker to the punch than my 1020 and yes I may lose some quality, I'm not losing time.

I think the real deal with the 1020 is that I believe it has Xenon flash. As a previous 928 owner I say the flash is a bigger deal than you would think. It has an almost magical ability to freeze the scene. With LED only you get motion blur.

I suppose the balanced way to evaluate the scenario is to select key determinants and compare them side by side, e.g. compare performance (graphics and responsiveness), ergonomics (phone size and design), camera quality, hardware eligibility for updates, battery life, etc. In my opinion, the 1520 wins in all of these criteria (though maybe not by a far cry), except in camera and a bit in ergonomics (since some may find the 1520 "too" large). That being said, the 1020 can be considered a "slight" downgrade from the 1520, but definitely not a "bad" phone at all.

It depends on which feature you put as the most important for you. If it's camera quality; then you can't beat the lumia 1020 + the camera grip + tripod. That way you can actually use the 4s exposure for awesome effects.

However if you want a more balanced camera phone, no questions....lumia 1520. bigger screen (extra column of live tiles), sd car, better battery, wireless charging included, getting most features from denim soon, 4 microphones

Unless if you can get a cheap bundle (all 3 in a cheap price), then yes get the 1020.

The L1020 is also capable of having an extra (third) column of live tiles, but of course they won't be as "huge" as they are in the L1520.
