Not being able to use USB or Bluetooh for 510 on PC(Windows 8)

I have connected my Nokia Lumia 510 to my PC with Windows 8. The phone is being detected because the PC suite responds and starts. Also in the respective drive I can see the Windows Phone and the pictures.
Also in the pc suite the contacts come up. But I am not being able to backup my messages. The "Connect Phone" on pc suite does not detect the phone in either USB mode or Bluetooth.
The Nokia Lumia 510 in settings has the BlueTooth on but there is no option of USB mode.
Please suggest how can I enable the same so that I can back up my messages and other details.
