I'm going away to france for a few days and i want to know if my phone ( nokia lumia 520 ) will work out there

As long as your phone is factory unlocked then you're good to go.

Erm.... You don't say where you are from. It may make a difference regarding which variant of 520 you have.

In France, most common for 3G use are the 900 and 2100 MHz bands. The RM-914 variant has both these bands and would be a Euro style release and would get 3G. In the US the RM-915 (and the T-Mo RM-917 Lumia 521) lack the 900 MHz frequency on the 3G radio. They may only get you EDGE speed.

How can you see which you have? Settings > extras + info > Manufacturer Name.

Also as mentioned above: if your phone is locked to a carrier you could not use a local SIM. If you are roaming in another country, check your carrier for how much that costs.

If you are planning on using the internet for messaging and Skype, etc... WiFi would be your best bet.
